CHANDLER, Ariz. (3/23/06) -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the defending NCAA Division III national champions, pounded out 22 hits in claiming a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg College at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Thursday at the Snedigar Complex in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler.
The Warhawks won the first game 13-2 and the second game 4-1 in its first action of the season. Augsburg is now 7-5-1.
Whitewater collected 14 hits and pulled away in the middle innings of the first contest, scoring twice in the third inning, three times in the fourth and four times in the fifth inning. Three more runs came across in the seventh for the Warhawks.
Meanwhile, Augsburg was limited to just four hits in the game, with two hits coming from
Nate Jackson (Jr., Richfield, Minn.). He had a double and scored a run.
Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) singled and scored a run, and
Andrew Werner (So., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) also had a hit.
Ginther started for the Auggies and struck out two in four innings of work.
Adam Johnson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Josh Remme (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) pitched in relief.
Greg Harder went 3-for-4 with four RBI for the Warhawks, while Jason Rutz went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Andrew Keller struck out three to record the pitching win.
In the second game, Augsburg jumped out to an early lead, as a
Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) single plated
Andy Nelson (Sr., Waseca, Minn.), but the Warhawks responded with a run in the second, as Eddie Adamson doubled and scored on a single by Bill Gorman. Whitewater claimed the win with three runs in the fifth, on RBI singles by Matt DeLong, Greg Harder and Eddie Adamson.
Deden and Ginther had two hits apiece for the Auggies, with Ginther adding a double.
Evan Almeroth (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek HS) pitched a complete game for Augsburg, striking out four while allowing a walk and eight hits. Mike Jacobson struck out three in five innings of work for the Warhawks, with Greg Riek pitching two innings and striking out one in relief.
Augsburg finishes its week of play at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Friday (3/24) at 10 a.m., with a doubleheader against Thomas College (Maine).
