Andrew Werner (So., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) claimed his second 10-strikeout performance of the season with a six-inning, one-hit effort in the opener, and
Pat Gornick (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) struck out six to collect his second win of the season in the second game, as the Augsburg College baseball team finished its week of games at the Greater Phoenix Invitational with a sweep of Thomas College (Maine) in a doubleheader Friday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler.
Augsburg scored a 7-1 victory in the first game and a 6-4 win in the second game to improve to 9-5-1 on the season. In nine games in Phoenix, Augsburg went 5-4.
Werner struck out 10 while walking two and allowing just one hit in six innings of work in the first game to earn the win. Reliever
Tyler Kraft (Jr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) pitched in relief in both games of the doubleheader, picking up the save in the second game.
Augsburg pounded out 13 hits in the first game, limiting Thomas to just three hits.
Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) went 3-for-4 in the first game with a triple, driving in three runs and scoring one.
Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) also went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, collecting a double. Leadoff hitter
Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) went 2-for-4 with a double adn three runs scored, and
Nate Jackson (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) also went 2-for-4.
Jordan McDonald had two of Thomas' three hits in the first game. Brian Gardner started and struck out three, with Taylor Helberg pitching in relief.
In the second game, Augsburg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, then scored twice each in the fifth and sixth innings to react to Thomas rallies.
Mark Bauer (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) went 2-for-2 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored to lead the Auggies, while
Dusty Hinz (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) had a double to drive in a run, while scoring twice.
Gornick struck out six in six innings of work, while Kraft had a strikeout in hs inning of relief. Neither pitcher walked a batter in the game. Mark Rouleau pitched for Thomas. Brandon Connors had a home run and double in going 3-for-3 for Thomas with two runs scored, while Matt Pavlis had two doubles in going 3-for-4.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next Saturday (4/1) with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at St. Thomas.
