GAME 2 BOXSCORE
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/19/06) -- Doug Sylvester (So., Fargo, N.D./North HS) was a combined 5-for-8 with three RBI and three runs scored, powering the Carleton College baseball team to 13-8 and 6-5 wins over visiting Augsburg College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field.
His run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth plated Stephen Thompson (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) with the game-winning run in the nightcap.
In the nightcap, Carleton (6-14 overall, 4-6 MIAC) scored its final five runs with two outs. In the fourth, Matt Topeff (Jr., Andover, Minn./Blaine HS) tripled with two outs and scored on a Nick Shepard (Jr., New York/Fieldston School) single. Shepard scored after a Sylvester single and Ethan Guevin (Fr., Davis, Calif.) base hit.
The Auggies (14-12-1 overall, 4-6 MIAC) grabbed the lead with a three-spot in the sixth, behind a two-run double by
Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and an RBI single by
Nate Jackson (Jr., Richfield, Minn.), but Carleton regained the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the frame on a Sylvester RBI triple with two outs, followed by Guevin's run-scoring single.
The Auggies forced extra innings by pushing a single run across in the seventh off reliever Luke Muellerleile (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi HS). The Auggies threatened in the top of the eighth, but right-fielder Thompson cut down a runner trying to advance to third on a single and a flyout ended the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Thompson singled and took second on an error. After a failed bunt attempt retired a batter, Sylvester shot a base hit through the right side. The throw actually beat Thompson to the plate, but he was able to slide around Augsburg catcher
Troy Deden's (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) tag to score the game-winning run.
Muellerleile picked up his first collegiate win, going three innings and allowing one run on four hits. Brian Sharkey (Sr., Bow, N.H./St. Paul's School) lasted five innings and allowed three hits and four runs, three earned, with two walks in taking the no decision.
Guevin was 2-for-2 with two RBI and Shepard was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored. For Augsburg,
Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Andrew Werner (So., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) struck out seven in 5.2 innings of pitching for the Auggies.
In the opener, the Knights exploded for 13 hits and scored a conference-season team-high 13 runs. Carleton led 3-0 after two innings and 11-1 after four.
Jay Melson (Fr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) was 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and two doubles. Topeff notched three hits with a double, three RBI and two runs scored and Shepard knocked home three runs with a bases-loaded double that chased Augsburg ace Ginther with two outs in the third.
John Hollowed (So., Mercer Island, Wash.) went the distance, allowing nine hits and eight runs, only five earned, with four walks and three strikeouts in his first complete-game collegiate victory. He gave up only four hits and one run over the first five innings.
Ginther and
Matt Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) had two hits each for the Auggies, with each hitter contributing a double. Werner drove in three runs in the game.
The win keeps the Knights' MIAC playoff hopes alive as they travel to Macalester College on Saturday (4/22) at 1 p.m. Augsburg will host Concordia-Moorhead in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Parade Stadium.
