MINNEAPOLIS (4/22/06) -- Blake Trenbeath (Sr., Cavalier, N.D.) struck out four and claimed Concordia College-Moorhead's first shutout victory of the season with a 7-0 triumph in the first game, but Augsburg College came back with a season-high 18-run, 19-hit effort in an 18-3 victory in the second game, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Parade Stadium.

Concordia split its sixth doubleheader in a row and 10th in its last 11 twinbills to move to 14-16 overall, 6-8 in MIAC play. Augsburg snapped a five-game losing streak with the second-game win to move to 15-13-1 overall, 5-7 in MIAC play.

Trenbeath allowed just four Augsburg hits while allowing just one hit batter and no walks to record the complete-game victory in the first game for the Cobbers. Meanwhile, Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 3-for-4 with a double and triple, driving in three runs, and Bobby Hager (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) went 3-for-3 with four RBI and a double for the Auggies in the second game.

The Cobbers took an early lead in the first first inning of the first game. Leadoff hitter Billy DeNet (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) led off the game by reaching base on an error, then came across on a double by Chris Klabo (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.). Brian Schumacher (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) then hit his second home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field, to give the Cobbers a 3-0 advantage.

In the sixth inning, Concordia again scored three runs, as Schumacher hit a two-run triple and Matt Youngquist (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Another run came across in the seventh, as Brian Knoblauch (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by DeNet.

Augsburg had its best chance to score in the sixth inning, as an error and two hit batters loaded the bases with two outs. But a diving catch by rightfielder Knoblauch on a fly ball ended the Auggie threat.

Augsburg pitcher Evan Almeroth (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek HS) pitched a complete-game effort in the first game, striking out four while walking one and allowing just five hits. Only four of the seven runs against him were earned, as Augsburg committed three errors.

Both teams scored two runs apiece in the first inning of the second game, as Concordia's Ryan Emter (Jr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) doubled and scored on a single by Klabo, and Youngquist's single drove in Klabo. Augsburg scored twice on two hits in the bottom of the frame, as a groundout by Mike Zaun (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) plated a run and a sacrifice fly by Hager plated another.

In the third, Augsburg scored twice, on RBI doubles by Ginther and Hager, and the Auggies scored twice again in the fourth, on a two-run double by Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.).

After Concordia scored a single run in the fifth, the Auggies exploded, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and five runs in the sixth. Augsburg sent 13 batters to the plate and collected seven hits in the fifth inning, and sent 11 batters to the plate and had five hits in the sixth.

RBI singles by Zaun, Tim Wahl (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Hinz drove in runs in the sixth inning, along with a two-run single by Ginther and a hit batter with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Ginther also had a triple to open the frame.

In the sixth, RBI singles by Hager, Matt Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and Mark Bauer (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) plated runs, with two other runs coming across on an error.

Seven of the nine starters had hits for the Auggies. In addition to Hager's and Ginther's three-hit efforts, Schreier and Hinz also had three hits each. Deden and Bauer had two hits each, and Pat Gornick (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) scored three runs. Hinz scored four runs, and Ginther, Schreier and Brian Bambenek (Jr., St. Charles, Minn.) scored twice each.

Gornick started for the Auggies and lasted 4.2 innings, striking out five while not allowing a walk. Tyler Kraft (Jr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.

Schumacher was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cobbers in the second game.
