MENOMONIE, Wis. (4/26/06) -- Augsburg College outhit the University of Wisconsin-Stout, but the Blue Devils pieced more runs together and took an 18-12 nonconference win over the Auggies in a nonconference baseball game on Wednesday at Nelson Field.
The scheduled nine-inning game looked like it was going to be a 10-run rule contest after Stout (10-18) knocked in seven runs in the second inning, highlighted by Tim Schneider's (So., West Salem, Wis.) three-run home run. Bryan Vilstrup (So., Frederic, Wis.) drove in two runs with a double as Stout sent 12 to the plate.
The Auggies (16-15-1) got to Blue Devil starter Rob Heller (Jr., Coon Valley, Wis.) for six runs in the fourth, as they sent 12 batters to the plate.
Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) drove in two runs for Augsburg with a single.
Erik Johnson (So., La Crosse, Wis.) hit his first of two home runs in the bottom of the fourth as the leadoff hitter and Vilstrup gave Stout a 9-6 lead, driving in a run.
The Auggies took the lead in the top of the fifth, getting four runs, one earned, off Brock Stimson (So., Lakeville, Minn). Stout committed three errors in the inning, helping to set the table for the Auggies.
Andy Nelson (Sr., Waseca, Minn.),
Eric Dunivent (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.),
Dusty Hinz (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) and
Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) each drove in a run.
But Stimson would benefit from Stout's bottom half of the inning to get the win as the Blue Devils exploded for six runs for a 15-10 lead. Johnson hit his second home run in as many at-bats, this time a two-run shot, and Matt Krause (So., Bonduel, Wis.) crushed a three-run home run. Luke Schultz (Jr., Menomonie, Wis.) doubled in a run.
Stout added two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth as Johnson walked with the bases loaded and Tanner Kattre (Fr., Abbotsford, Wis.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Auggies' Ginther rapped a two run home run in the seventh. Schneider scored Krause in the seventh with a sacrifice fly for the final score.
Ginther was 5-for-5 for Augsburg with four RBI.
Mark Bauer (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) was 3-for-5 and Deden was 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Krause and Andy Lorenzen (Fr., Menomonie, Wis.) were each 3-for-4. Both scored three runs and Krause knocked in three runs. Johnson was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Vilstrup was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Schneider was 1-for-2 with four RBI. Kattre was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Augsburg will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Macalester on Saturday (4/29) at 1 p.m. at Parade Stadium. Stout will host Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday and Sunday (4/29-30), with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon both days.
