GAME 2 BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (4/5/06) -- Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) struck out five in recording his second straight complete-game victory in the first game for Augsburg College, while Josh Rogier (So., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) struck out four in a one-hit shutout in the second game for Hamline University, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Parade Stadium.
Augsburg won the first game 2-1, while Hamline won the second game 3-0. Augsburg is now 11-7-1 overall, 2-2 in MIAC play, while Hamline is now 12-8 overall, 2-2 in MIAC play.
The Auggies took an early lead in the first game, as a Jeff Stomberg (So., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) single drove in Matt Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) with two outs in the second inning.
Hamline answered in the top of the third, as an infield single by Aaron Thompson (Jr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) plated Mike Goldsmith (Fr., New Prague, Minn.). But Augsburg took the lead back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out double by Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), which drove in Ginther from first base.
Hamline had two runners aboard, including a runner at third, in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Ginther was able to escape unscathed as the innings ended on a flyout and groundout.
Stomberg went 2-for-3 to lead the Auggies in the first game, while Owen Waller (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) went 3-for-3 for the Pipers.
Brian Martin (So., Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins HS) started for Hamline and struck out five in four innings of work, with Kyle Foster (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) pitching in relief.
In the second game, Roiger allowed just one hit, a fourth-inning single by Deden. Roiger walked one and allowed only five baserunners, as two Auggies reached on errors and another reached on a fielder's choice. But the Auggies grounded into one double play and stranded the remaining three runners on base.
Hamline scored twice in the fifth, as a double by Goldsmith drove in Waller, and a single by James McGee (Fr., Fridley, Minn.) plated Geoff Fuller (So., Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS). Hamline scored in the seventh, as McGee doubled to put Fuller on third base, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Thompson. Goldsmith and McGee had two hits apiece for the Pipers.
Augsburg starter Evan Almeroth (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek HS) struck out four in five innings of work, with Andrew Werner (So., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) striking out one in two innings of relief.
Both teams have doubleheaders on Saturday (4/8) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg plays a nonconference twinbill at Buena Vista (Iowa) and Hamline hosts Gustavus in conference action.
