Sean Kelly (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) compiled 11 tackles (three solo), Garrett Kratz (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) compiled eight tackles (three solo) and Andrew Bergeson (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) had seven tackles (one solo).

Augsburg defenders blocked three St. John's extra points – one each by Royce Winford (So., Albertville, Minn./Osseo HS), Alex Glasenapp (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Schreier.

For the Johnnies, Nick Kotsmith (So., Foley, Minn.) and Mitch Eversman (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) had five tackles apiece, with Eversman adding a sack. Nick Gunderson (So., Woodbury, Minn.) also had a sack, and Mike Burtzel (Sr., Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) and Brandon Hoskins (Sr., Billings, Mont.) had interceptions.

Hoskins' interception ended the Auggies' final drive of the contest, a 14-play, 64-yard effort that was stopped at the St. John's 4-yard line with 22 seconds left in the game.

Augsburg had 228 yards of total offense (171 passing, 57 rushing) and turned the ball over three times – on two interceptions and a fumble. St. John's did not have a turnover in the game, and compiled 30 first downs to Augsburg's 12.

The last Augsburg win in the series was a 20-10 triumph at Augsburg on Sept. 20, 1997, the only Augsburg win over St. John's since 1980. The teams began the series in Augsburg's first year of football, 1926, and have played every year since 1954. St. John's coach John Gagliardi is 47-4-1 in his career against Augsburg.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg opened its season with a 31-24 nonconference loss at Northwestern-Roseville last Saturday. St. John's improved to 2-0 with a 41-9 home win over Wisconsin-River Falls last Saturday.

LAST YEAR: St. John's claimed a 56-16 victory over Augsburg on Oct. 22, 2005 at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn.

TRIVIA FACT OF THE WEEK: This is the first time St. John's has been the first home opponent for Augsburg since 1997, which was a 20-10 Augsburg victory. Prior to that, St. John's was the first home foe of the Auggies in 1981 (26-7 St. John's win), 1967 (13-3 St. John's win) and 1947 (7-6 St. John's win). According to St. John's, the Johnnies are 24-2-1 all-time in games played at Augsburg.

MIGHTY MATSON: Augsburg linebacker Mike Matson (Sr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) enters this season as a possible NCAA Division III All-American candidate, after having one of the top defensive seasons of any Division III player last year. He picked up where he left off in last week's game against Northwestern, compiling 10 tackles (seven solo), including three tackles for loss. The effort marked the seventh straight game that Matson has accumulated double-digit figures in tackles. Matson now has 248 tackles (107 solo) in his career, including 16.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two blocked kicks.

This summer, Matson was one of two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players (Bethel offensive lineman Ryan Wassink was the other) to earn a spot on the 2006 Preseason All-Division III First Team in Lindy's National College Football preview magazine. In 2005, Matson earned second-team All-MIAC honors, D3Football.com All-America third team and All-West Region second-team honors, and Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-West Region third-team honors.

Matson had a breakout year in 2005 as a leader on the Augsburg defense. He finished the 2005 season with 155 tackles (74 solo), leading the MIAC in both overall (15.5 tackles per game) and MIAC play (138, 17.3 tackles per game). Matson finished second nationally among Division III players in total tackles (15.5 per game), as one of just two Division III players to average 15.0 or more tackles per game during the season. He also ranked sixth nationally in solo tackles (7.4 per game).

MINUS BROTHERS ARE A PLUS FOR AUGGIES: Anthony Minus is in his second year as an Augsburg assistant coach (defensive line). His brother Arthur Minus (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Humboldt HS) will be joining the Auggies this season as a running back. Arthur Minus was an all-conference rusher at St. Paul Humboldt HS and transfers after playing one season (1999) at Southwest Minnesota State; Anthony Minus played collegiately at Concordia-St. Paul (1998) and Southwest Minnesota State (2001-02) as a defensive lineman.

Arthur Minus made an impressive Augsburg debut last weekend at Northwestern-Roseville, accumulating 90 yards on 18 carries, while also catching five passes for 44 yards. He also scored on a 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

PASSING FANCY: Augsburg's offense is designed around the pass, and it showed some balance in the season-opening game against Northwestern-Roseville, as quarterbacks Keith Hagen (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) and Jordan Berg (So., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) combined for 30 completions for 283 yards, with five different receivers accumulating 40 or more yards each in receiving. Hagen, making his sixth collegiate start, threw for 158 yards on 17-of-28 passing with two touchdowns; Berg, a transfer from Division II Minnesota-Duluth, threw for 125 yards on 13-of-26 passing.

Ricky Schreier (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) led the way for the Auggies in receiving, with six catches for 74 yards. Tight end Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.) caught seven passes for 65 yards, and Royce Winford (So., Albertville, Minn./Osseo HS) caught eight passes for 60 yards and a touchdown.

TURNOVER TROUBLES: Last season, the Auggies had a minus-18 turnover margin, giving up 31 turnovers (10 fumbles, 21 interceptions), while only accumulating 13 takeaways (seven fumbles, six interceptions). In Augsburg's 2006 season-opener at Northwestern-Roseville, turnovers again plagued the Auggies, suffering three interceptions and two fumbles lost. Meanwhile, Northwestern had no interceptions and just two fumbles lost. Three of Augsburg's five fourth-quarter possessions ended in turnovers, as the Auggies tried to come from behind.

NEUMANN A TWO-SPORT STAR: A player who could possibly earn high honors in two sports this year is tight end Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.), who excels on both the football field and wrestling mat for the Auggies. Neumann led all MIAC tight ends last season in receiving yardage (63.2 yards per game in league play) and receptions (5.62 per game in league play). He earned All-MIAC first team and Football Gazette All-West Region honorable mention honors in 2005.

Neumann is also an accomplished wrestler; he qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament last season as Augsburg's heavyweight, finishing 25-10 (54-30 in his career). In high school, he was a member of a Wisconsin state championship football team and was a state individual champion as a wrestler.

SCHREIER ALSO EXCELS IN TWO SPORTS: Like Andrew Neumann, wide receiver Ricky Schreier (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) is a two-sport star for the Auggies. He was named All-MIAC second team in football and earned All-MIAC honorable mention honors in baseball last season.

Schreier led the Auggie football team with 766 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 53 receptions, while he added his kick return skills (505 yards on 27 returns) to finish third in the league in all-purpose yards (1,275). In baseball, Schreier was second among team regulars in hitting, with a .364 average (40-for-110). He is Augsburg's starting leftfielder.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR ROBACK RETURNS TO AUGGIES: Jim Roback (Augsburg '63), who was inducted into Augsburg's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990, returns for his second stint on the Augsburg coaching staff. He served on Jack Osberg's Auggie staff from 1995-2002, from 1995-2001 as defensive coordinator and in 2002 as offensive coordinator.

A native of Columbia Heights, Minn., Roback taught and coached in Anoka-Hennepin School District 11 for 34 years at both Anoka (8 years) and Coon Rapids (26 years) high schools. He was an assistant on the 1983 Coon Rapids Class AA state championship football team and has also helped coach teams and individuals to prep state tournaments in baseball, basketball and track & field. After starring in baseball and football for Augsburg, Roback played professional baseball for one year in the Minnesota Twins' organization.

HUDSON TWINS AGAIN: For the second time in recent years, Augsburg has a set of twins from Hudson, Wis., on the roster, as running back Nick Francis (Fr., Hudson, Wis.) and defensive back Chris Francis (Fr., Hudson, Wis.) join the team. Twins Ted Schultz and Bob Schultz, also from Hudson, played for the Auggies from 1994-97, Ted as a tight end and Bob as a linebacker. Both were multiple All-MIAC recipients in their careers.

LAST YEAR: The No. 5-ranked St. John's football team remained undefeated on the season, beating visiting Augsburg 56-16 before 8,192 fans at Clemens Stadium on Oct. 22, 2005.

St. John's first touchdown came with 7:58 to go in the first quarter on a 14 yard run by Corey Weber. The Johnnies took a 14-0 lead on a 62 yard pass to Kyle Gearman from quarterback Alex Kofoed with 13:31 left in the second quarter.

SJU increased its lead to 28-0 with 6:10 to go in the second quarter, with an interception return of 16 yards by sophomore linebacker Jeff Schulte. Schulte's touchdown marked his first career touchdown at SJU. The Johnnies added their fifth touchdown of the game on another Weber run, this time for two yards with just over a minute left before the clock expired, to end the first half with a score of 35-0.

The Johnnies struck first in the second half by Craig Luberts' four-yard run with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Auggies etched their way onto the scoreboard with a one yard run by Garry Ashby-Phan with 4:49 left to go in the third quarter to cut the Johnnie lead to 42-7.

St. John's would go on to score two more times in the game, on a 48-yard run by Luberts in the third and an eight-yard run by Aaron Blackmore in the fourth quarter. Blackmore's touchdown marked his first touchdown of the season and of his career. The Auggies added to their point total two times in the fourth, on a safety by Mike Struss and on a one-yard run from David Lange with 12 seconds remaining in the game.

On the day, the Johnnies outgained the Auggies 448 to 235 in total offense. SJU had 226 yards passing and 222 yards rushing, while the Johnnie defense held the Auggies to 160 yards passing and 75 yards rushing, respectively. St. John's had 22 first downs, compared to 11 first downs for Augsburg. SJU had three fumbles; however, none were lost, while Augsburg had six fumbles and lost one of them. There also were five interceptions in the game, four of which were notched by St. John's.

Individually for SJU, Luberts had six carries with a net of 68 yards, averaging 11.3 yards per carry and tallying two touchdowns. Weber added 13 carries for 64 total yards with three rushing touchdowns. Mike Lofboom also had 42 rushing yards on eight carries for the Johnnies. Kofoed was 11-of-20 passing, with 211 total yards, had one interception, one sack and one touchdown. Gearman caught one pass for 62 yards and one receiving touchdown. Lofboom also added two catches for 50 yards and Casey Haugen had three catches for 37 total yards.

On the defensive end for the Johnnies, Kevin McNamara led the way with six total tackles on the day, including three tackles for a loss of 13 yards. McNamara also tallied one sack for eight yards and hurried the quarterback twice. Jason Good and Matt Hawn both contributed with five total tackles each and a breakup for each. Brandon Freihammer also assisted the defensive unit with one sack for nine yards and forced a fumble. SJU's sophomore Schulte tallied an interception return for 16 yards in the game, which resulted in a touchdown. Garrett Adamson also notched an interception for a return of 18 yards and Shawn Schoenberg nabbed an interception. Anthony Schmidt was a perfect 8-of-8 in extra point attempts, but had one field goal attempt blocked just before halftime.

The Auggies were led by quarterback Keith Hagen, who threw for 106 yards. Running back Ashby-Phan rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown, and Steve Houser added 34 yards. Running back Jason Potts received six passes for 80 yards on the day. Punter Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) had nine punts on the day for 356 yards, averaging 39.6 yards per punt and tallying the longest punt of the day at 49 yards.

Mike Matson recorded 13 tackles (four solo) for the Auggies, while Taylor Kroger had 11 tackles (five solo) and Brandon Rudenick had 10 tackles (three solo). Jordan Hastings had an interception and Zach Manship recorded a sack.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Leading 31-to-17 late in the third quarter last Saturday, it looked as though Northwestern-Roseville would cruise to an easy non-conference victory over Augsburg. The victory part held true, as the Eagles prevailed in a 31-24 final score. However, the visiting Auggies of Augsburg battled to the end, as a Northwestern interception with just seconds left finally sealed the Eagle triumph.

Northwestern broke a scoreless tie with 6:08 left in the first quarter, as quarterback Josh Peterson connected with wide receiver Kyle Thomforde for a 34-yard touchdown strike. The played capped off a 6-play, 61-yard drive for the Eagles. The extra point attempt failed. Still in the opening quarter, Augsburg cut its deficit in half as Kyle Danner (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS) drilled a 20-yard field goal to make the score 6-3, still in favor of Northwestern.

The final minutes of the first half featured a scoring spree. Northwestern first added to its advantage as running back Ben Freedman sprinted into the corner of the end zone from 2-yards out with 2:14 left in the half to put the Eagles in front 12-3 with the point-after attempt failing again.

Augsburg had plenty of punches still to throw in the first half, though, as the Auggies quickly marched down the field and recorded a touchdown on a 28-yard pass from quarterback Keith Hagen (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) to Jason Potts (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) with 39 seconds left in the quarter. The scoring play ended an impressive 5-play, 49-yard drive, and made the score 12-to-10 still in favor of Northwestern. On the following kickoff, Northwestern turned the ball over on a fumble and Augsburg took advantage. Three-plays later and with just 1 second remaining in the opening half, the Auggies pulled in front as Hagen hit Royce Winford (So., Albertville, Minn./Osseo HS) in the back of the end zone to move Augsburg ahead of the Eagles in a 17-to-12 score.

Northwestern came out blazing in the second half as the Eagles racked up three touchdowns in the quarter on three straight possessions. Freedman notched his second touchdown of the game, putting the finishing touch on a 6-play, 37-yard drive, when he dashed in from 1-yard out. Play-caller Peterson followed with a quarterback sneak into the end zone, giving Northwestern a 25-to-17 lead. Defensive back Tom Tadych then took his turn as he intercepted an Auggie pass and went the distance, scampering 29-yards to give the Eagles a commanding 31-to-17 lead with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter.

After both teams exchanged possession twice without scoring, Augsburg narrowed the scoring gap to 31-to-24 as running back Arthur Minus (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Humboldt HS) pounded his way across the goal line from 12-yards out to wrap up a 4-play, 43-yard drive, with 6:33 left in the clash. Augsburg squandered away its final chances to tie the game as the Auggies turned the ball over on a fumble and interception in consecutive possessions during the final minutes.

The box score displayed an evenly matched affair on paper. Both teams tallied 19 first downs with Augsburg racking up 351 yards of total offense, while Northwestern owned 317 yards on the afternoon. The big difference came in how the yards were earned, as the Eagles grounded out 157 yards in the rushing game, compared to just 68 for the Auggies. Augsburg starting quarterback Hagen completed 17-of-28 passes for 158 yards and 2 touchdowns, before being pulled with an injury. Minus took 18 carries for 90 yards to highlight the Auggie rushing attack, while Winford caught 8 passes for 60 yards to lead the Auggie receiving unit.

Defensively, Garrett Kratz (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) and Mike Matson (Sr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) paced the Auggies with Kratz pulling down 11 tackles, while Matson boasted 10 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, and 1 fumble recovery.

SCOUTING THE JOHNNIES (St. John's game notes available by clicking here): St. John's, ranked No. 4 in the latest D3Football.com Top 25 national poll and No. 3 in the latest Football Gazette Division III Top 40 poll, is 2-0, having edged Wisconsin-Eau Claire 15-11 on Sept. 2 and Wisconsin-River Falls 41-9 last Saturday. Head coach John Gagliardi, starting his 58th season of coaching and 54th at St. John's, became the first active coach to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, when he was enshrined in the hall this summer.

Last Saturday, running back Mike Patnode (Jr., Princeton, Minn.) turned in a crowd-pleasing performance in the St. John's 41-9 win over Wisconsin-River Falls. Patnode, who was filling in for the injured Craig Luberts (Jr., Pierz, Minn.) at running back, finished the game with 148 (66 rushing, 82 receiving) yards of total offense and three touchdowns.

St. John's got on the board early after Patnode ran six yards for a touchdown just 2:50 into the game. The point-after attempt by Anthony Schmidt (So., Shoreview, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) gave the Johnnies an early 7-0 lead.

Midway through the first quarter, River Falls' cornerback Jamie Bisch intercepted an errant pass from junior Alex Kofoed (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) and returned it for a 39-yard touchdown. Nick Gunderson (So., Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) blocked the extra point attempt to secure the 7-6 lead for SJU. Patnode scored his second touchdown of the game with 11:31 minutes remaining in the second quarter on another 6-yard scamper. The extra-kick failed leaving the Johnnies with a 13-6 lead over the visiting Falcons.

Kofoed completed a 30-yard pass to Mike Lofboom (Sr., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) to set up the Johnnies' third touchdown of the day, a 4-yard pass from Kofoed to Lofboom, to give the Johnnies a 20-6 lead. With one second remaining in the first half, the Falcons scored their final points of the day on a 25-yard field goal by kicker Spasimir Bodurski, cutting the Johnnie lead to 20-9. St. John's dominated the second half by adding three more touchdowns. Patnode scored his third touchdown of the game on a 58-yard screen pass from Kofoed with 1:49 minutes to go in the third.

Kofoed finished the game 14-of-19 passing for 265 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, senior Kyle Gearman (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) ended the game with two catches for 55 yards and one touchdown. Kicker Brian McKenna (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) was a perfect 4-for-4 in PAT attempts.

Defensive statistical leaders for the Johnnies included Jamie Steffensmeier (Sr., Mankato, Minn./East HS) who had 8 tackles on the day, and Kevin McNamara (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) who added 6 tackles including one quarterback sack for a 10-yard loss. The lone SJU interception came from John Cloeter (Jr., Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS).
