Women's Soccer 9/20/06 -- St. Scholastica 2, Augsburg 1 (2OT)
BOXSCORE
DULUTH, Minn. (9/20/06) -- The six-game unbeaten streak for the Augsburg College women's soccer team came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night, as the College of St. Scholastica scored with 40 seconds left in the second overtime to claim a 2-1 nonconference victory at Duluth Public Schools Stadium.
Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by a 34-11 margin, including a 30-7 margin in regulation time. But the Saints scored in the 65th minute to tie the game, then Shannon Kresky put in the game-winner on a one-touch shot from a long pass from Robin Johnson at the 109:20 mark.
Both teams are now 5-1-1 overall. St. Scholastica was an NAIA regional semifinalist last year.
"Although this was a heartbreaking loss, we played outstanding soccer tonight; we just gave up a couple odd goals and struggled to finish our chances," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "Sometimes it's difficult to beat the game, and the team that dominates play does not always win. We give credit to St. Scholastica for finding a way to win tonight."
After a scoreless first half, Augsburg scored in the 58th minute to take the lead, as
Angie Neuhaus (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) scored her second goal in as many games, an unassisted tally.
Johnson then scored for St. Scholastica, on an assist from Becky Fisher, in the 65th minute, setting the stage for overtime. Both teams had four shots in the extra sessions.
The St. Scholastica goals broke a unique streak for Augsburg, as they were the first goals given up by either the Auggie women's or men's soccer teams this season. The Auggie women's streak was ended at 640 minutes, a span that stretched for six games this season and 15 minutes from its last game of last season. Augsburg entered Wednesday's play as the only NCAA Division III school to have both its men's and women's soccer teams unbeaten and unscored-upon this far into the season.
Auggie goalkeeper
Maggie DeGroot (So., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) saw her personal shutout streak end at six games, as she claimed five saves in net. Kelly Momsen collected 18 saves for St. Scholastica.
Emily Anderson * (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) had seven shots for Augsburg, including three on net, while Neuhaus and
Whitney Holman (Fr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had five shots apiece.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (9/23) at 1 p.m., with a home game against Carleton at Edor Nelson Field.
