Cassens scores 26, Scott scores 22, Auggies top St. Mary's 83-73!

WINONA, Minn. (1/13/07) -- Jon Cassens (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) scored a career-high 26 points, as did Chuck Scott * (Sr., Ely, Minn.) with 22 points, as the Augsburg College men's basketball team claimed an 83-73 win over host St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the SMU Gym.

The Auggies connected on 12 three-pointers -- six from Cassens, four from Scott and two from Mitch Dice (Jr., Savage, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) -- to improve to 7-6 overall, 4-4 in MIAC play, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Dan Graf (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored 15 points for the Auggies, and Dice and Femi Solaja (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Paul Harding HS) scored eight points with seven rebounds each.

St. Mary's (3-9 overall, 2-6 MIAC) was paced by Brensley Haywood, who had 18 points, and Brad Knights and Michael Batterman, who had 12 points each. Nick Carr had 10 points and Dan Cormier had nine points.

Augsburg connected on 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the field in the second half to overcome a 41-40 halftime deficit, outscoring the Cardinals 43-32 in the second stanza. A 10-0 run gave the Auggies a 64-54 lead with 11:44 left in the game, and a 10-2 run later in the half gave the Auggies a 76-67 lead with 4:36 left. The lead did not dip below four points the rest of the way.

Augsburg outrebounded St. Mary's by a 40-26 margin. Augsburg shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field, while St. Mary's shot 43.6 percent from the field (24-of-55) in the game.

Both teams return to action on Monday (1/15) at 5:45 p.m., as Augsburg hosts Concordia-Moorhead at Si Melby Hall and St. Mary's hosts Bethel.
