NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/13/07) -- Leigh-Anne Borkowski's shot over the Augsburg College goalie on a deflected corner kick in the 99th minute gave host Carleton College a key 3-2 overtime win over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday. The victory, the Knights' sixth straight, keeps Carleton's MIAC playoff hopes alive with three conference matches remaining in the regular season.
The win puts the Knights in a tie for the fourth and final MIAC playoff spot with Macalester, although Carleton has three conference matches remaining and third-place Augsburg, which is only one point clear of Carleton and Macalester, has but two more MIAC contests on the slate. Thus, even if Augsburg wins out, the Knights control their own conference post-season destiny if they win their final three MIAC contests.
The game started on an ominous note for the Knights, as an own goal gave the Auggies a 1-0 lead. The Knights stayed resilient and scored only a minute later, as Clare O'Connor and Melley Turner worked a combination to set up Emma Dobbins for her fourth goal of the season. All of her tallies have come in the last five games.
Carleton pressed on and was rewarded in the 31st minute when Nicky Bloom scored her fourth of the season when Mia Zutz sent the ball across the goal mouth and Bloom slotted it home, giving the Knights a 2-1 lead at intermission.
The Auggies (7-5-3 overall, 5-3-1 MIAC) quickly posted the equalizer barely five minutes into the second half, as Lacey Hoover (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Central HS) won a scramble for a loose ball off a corner kick. Carleton dominated the run of play but couldn't find the go-ahead goal, resulting in overtime play.
The Knights had the only chances of the overtime, and Borkowski's finish came right before the end of the first overtime, giving the Knights a much-needed two points on the MIAC table.
Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 21-6 margin. Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot * (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) collected seven saves, while Carleton goalkeeper Yusi He collected three saves.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (10/16) at 7:30 p.m. with a nonconference home game against St. Scholastica at Edor Nelson Field. Carleton returns to action with a non-conference tilt on Monday (10/15) at 6 p.m. at Luther (Iowa).
