Football 10/20/07 -- Augsburg 38, Carleton 16

BOXSCORE

FootballNORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/20/07) -- Wide receiver Royce Winford (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) set a new Augsburg College and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference single-game record for receptions, catching 20 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns, as the Auggies scored a 38-16 victory over host Carleton College in an MIAC football game on Saturday afternoon at Laird Stadium.

Winford's 20 receptions broke the school's single-game record, set by Scott Hvistendahl in a 1998 game, and the conference single-game mark, set by Hvistendahl, Adam Herbst of St. John's (1997) and Dick Donlin of Hamline (1955). Winford collected 15 passes for 184 yards in the first half, en route to his second-straight 200-yard receiving game. He caught 14 passes for 241 yards and two scores last week against St. Thomas.

The 20-reception total is the most for any NCAA football player so far this season, regardless of division. The total is tied for the third-most in NCAA Division III history (the record, 23, was set by Massachusetts-Boston receiver Sean Munroe in a 1992 game) and tied for the 17th-most in NCAA all-division history (the record, 24, was set by Brown receiver Chas Gessner in a 2002 game and by Mississippi Valley State receiver Jerry Rice in a 1983 game).

His record was one of several set by the Auggies, who scored 28 first-quarter points and led 38-0 after three quarters. Augsburg is now 3-4 overall, 1-4 in MIAC play, the same record as Carleton after Saturday's play.

Quarterback Jordan Berg (Jr., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) set or tied four school records with his performance on Saturday, completing 39-of-65 passing for 415 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. Berg broke his previous school record for pass attempts (64, last season), broke the old record for passing yardage set by Dave Fransen in a 2002 game (405 yards), broke Fransen's record for total offensive yardage with 422 yards (old record was 398), and tied his old record for total offensive plays (68, last season).

As a team, Augsburg claimed a season-high 485 yards on 99 plays (415 yards passing, 70 rushing), the fourth time this season that Augsburg has had 400 or more yards of total offense, and the most yards for Augsburg in a single game since a 526-yard effort in a 45-42 overtime loss to St. Olaf on Nov. 12, 2004.

Meanwhile, Augsburg's defense claimed eight turnovers (seven interceptions and a fumble) and held Carleton to 296 yards of total offense -- 310 yards of passing and negative-14 rushing yards -- the first time Augsburg has held an opponent to negative rushing yardage since holding Carleton to negative-17 rushing yards in a 52-7 win on Oct. 30, 1999. The Auggie defense also claimed six quarterback sacks in the game -- three by Donovan Bates (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.).

Garrett Adamson (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Tyler Judkins (So., Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) claimed two interceptions apiece for the Auggies, while Adam Mead (Fr., St. Francis, Minn.), Andy Roff (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and David Tilton (Fr., Anoka, Minn.) also had interceptions. Adamson now has five interceptions on the season, while Judkins has four.

FootballAugsburg scored on its first four drives to build a 28-0 lead after the first quarter, holding the ball for 12:09 compared to just 2:51 for Carleton. An opening 11-play, 55-yard drive was capped by Berg's first scoring pass of the game, a 10-yarder to David Lange (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS). After a fumble on the ensuing kickoff was forced by Nick Hoffman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and recovered by kicker Jack Christopherson (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS), the Auggies drove 43 yards in seven plays, with Berg throwing a seven-yard touchdown pass to Muneer Al-Hameed (Fr., Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS).

After holding Concordia to a 3-and-out drive, the Auggies struck quickly, as on the first play after the punt, Winford caught his first touchdown pass from Berg, a season-long 63-yarder. Another 3-and-out drive by the Knights was followed by another score by the Auggies, as an eight-play, 49-yard drive ended with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Berg to Winford.

Augsburg's scoring was capped by an 18-yard field goal by Christopherson just before halftime, and by Winford's third touchdown reception, an 11-yarder from Berg with 3:28 left in the third quarter to give the Auggies a 38-0 lead.

Winford now has 993 receiving yards on 69 receptions this season, just seven yards away from becoming just the second Auggie individual receiver in school history to eclipse the 1,000-yard receiving mark in a single season. Hvistendahl, who caught 285 passes for 4,696 yards in his career, had three 1,000-yard seasons at Augsburg (1,860 in 1998, 1,328 in 1997 and 1,213 in 1996).

Meanwhile, Berg moved into fourth place in the school's single-season passing yardage record list with 2,112 yards, third place on the single-season completions list with 186, fifth place on the single-season passing attempts list with 329 and third place on the single-season passing touchdowns list with 21. Derrin Lamker (1993-97) set single-season school records in each category in 1997, with 247-for-413 passing for 2,951 yards and 24 touchdowns.

FootballCarleton cut into the Augsburg lead with 16 points in the fourth quarter, on a 10-yard scoring run by R.J. Jackson (Sr., Roseville, Minn./De La Salle HS) and a 73-yard "hook-and-lateral" pass from quarterback John Hollowed (Sr., Mercer Island, Wash.) to Matt Frank (Jr., Caledonia, Minn.) and Chris Gardner (Jr., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS).

Augsburg also had several other key individual performances. Wide receiver Mike Nourie (So., Nicollet, Minn.) caught 11 passes for 117 yards, marking the third time that both Nourie and Winford have both reached the century mark in receiving yardage this season. Running back Jason Potts (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) rushed for 69 yards on 24 carries.

Adamson led the Auggies with 10 tackles (four solo), while Adam Ebert (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Mead had nine tackles apiece. Bates and Judkins had eight tackles each, and Jake Schoenecker (So., New Prague, Minn.) and LeRoy Roby (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Osseo HS) also had quarterback sacks.

For Carleton, quarterback Jacob Anderson (Fr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) threw for 111 yards on 12-of-26 passing, before being relieved by Hollowed in the second half. He threw for 199 yards on 14-of-24 passing. Jackson rushed for 24 yards, moving into fifth place on Carleton's career rushing record list with 2,238 career yards. Gardner had 128 receiving yards on five catches, while Frank had 92 receiving yards on eight catches.

Defensively, Drew Ziller (Jr., Byron, Minn./Rochester Lourdes HS) led the Knights with 14 tackles (11 solo), while Eric Paul (Sr. Lake Forest, Ill.) had 10 tackles (six solo) and Mike Morrissey (Sr., Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick HS) had nine tackles (five solo).

Both teams return to MIAC play next Saturday (10/27) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Gustavus Adolphus at Edor Nelson Field and Carleton playing at Concordia-Moorhead.
