MINNEAPOLIS (10/3/07) -- Lacey Hoover (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Central HS) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 58th minute and goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot * (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) recorded her 23rd career shutout and fourth in a row with an 10-save effort for Augsburg College, as the Auggies broke a 12-game winless streak against Macalester College with a 1-0 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
"It's obviously a great win anytime you can beat a team like Macalester," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre, who recorded his first win over the Scots in his nine years at Augsburg. "We felt very good going into the game. We've been very competitve with Macalester recently, losing last year with five seconds left and tying the year before, so we were confident that we could beat them."
The lone goal of the game came on a long-ball feed from Jackie Keller * (Sr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) to Katie Medd (Jr., Mankato, Minn./East HS). Medd popped the ball ahead to Hoover, who eluded Macalester goalkeeper Jenny Lee (Jr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) and deposited the ball in the open net.
Augsburg is now 6-3-3 overall, 4-1-1 in MIAC play; Macalester is now 7-3-0 overall, 4-1-0 in MIAC play. With the win, Augsburg moved past Macalester into a tie with Concordia-Moorhead for second place in the MIAC standings with nine conference points; St. Benedict leads the league standings with 12 points.
Augsburg claimed the win despite being outshot by a 21-9 margin, including an 11-2 margin in the second half. Macalester also had eight corner kicks to Augsburg's four.
DeGroot extended hers, and her team's, scoreless streak to 461:43 over the last five games with her fourth straight shutout. DeGroot is now tied with Laura Hoffman (2000-03) for second place in the school's career shutout record list with 23. Beth Petrik (1995-98) holds the school record, with 26.
Augsburg also benefitted from a strong defense -- the back line of Keller, Felicia Faison (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Kristi Castelic (So., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) and Whitney Holman (So., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).
"Our team defense was outstanding. We are really playing well defensively right now," Navarre said.
Angie Neuhaus (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) had four shots for the Auggies, while Hoover had three shots and Medd had two. Grace King (Jr., Northampton, Mass.) had seven shots for Macalester, while Maddie Mette (So., Burnsville, Minn.) had four shots. Lee had two saves in goal for the Scots.
Augsburg claimed just its third win over Macalester in program history; Augsburg is 3-21-3 against Macalester since the Auggies' first season of women's soccer in 1985, with its prior wins coming in 1987 (2-1) and 1996 (2-1).
Both teams return to action on Saturday (10/6) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg plays at St. Thomas, while Macalester plays at St. Benedict.
"Although it's a great win, there is a lot of soccer left to be played," Navarre said. "We have to continue to get better and find a way to do well on the road against a tough St. Mary's team."
