MINNEAPOLIS (10/9/07) -- Noreen Hogan (Sr., Moline, Ill./Alleman HS) scored on a rebound off a long shot by Whitney Holman (So., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) in the 37th minute, providing the lone goal for Augsburg College in a 1-0 victory over visiting Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Tuesday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot * (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) recorded her 24th career shutout and sixth in her last eight games, collecting eight saves. DeGroot passed Laura Hoffman (2000-03, 23 shutouts) for second place on the school's career shutout record list; Beth Petrik (1995-98) holds the school record, with 26.
"This was a great win for us. We needed to find a way to get it done, and I'm proud of the players for the will they brought to the game," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre.
Augsburg (7-4-3 overall, 5-2-1 MIAC) moved back into a tie with Concordia-Moorhead (8-2-1 overall, 5-0-1 MIAC) for second place in the MIAC standings with 11 conference points, three points behind league-leader St. Benedict (12-1-0 overall, 7-1-0 MIAC, 14 points), which lost for the first time this season on Tuesday, 1-0 to Hamline. Gustavus is now 7-6-0 overall, 2-5-0 in MIAC play.
Both teams took advantage of a strong wind from the west during the game, as Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 22-15 margin. With the wind in the first half, Augsburg outshot Gustavus by an 11-6 margin; Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 16-4 margin in the second half with the wind at its back.
"The wind was problematic for both teams tonight. Fortunately, our defense was up to the challenge. Maggie DeGroot *, in particular, was spectacular tonight," Navarre said. "Noreen's goal was obviously huge. She deserved it -- she played very well overall and the goal was a result of her hard work and persistence tonight."
Holman served a long shot from 45 yards out, which rebounded off of Gustavus goalkeeper Ashley Ohlson (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS). Hogan collected the rebound in front and put the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
Ohlson had nine saves in goal for the Gusties. Callie Christensen (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Jenna Iaizzo (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had five shots each for the Gusties, while Christy Tupy (Jr., Eagan, Minn./Burnsville HS) had four shots.
Mitra Rahimi * (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had four shots for the Auggies, while Angie Neuhaus (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) and Holman had three shots each.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday. Augsburg plays at Carleton at 11 a.m., while Gustavus hosts Bethel at 1 p.m.
"Saturday's game against Carleton feels like a playoff game, as both teams are looking to establish spots in the top four and could meet in a tiebreaking situation," Navarre said. "So basically, the winner gets double the points. The team is already excited, and I know Carleton will be fired up. This is fun!"
