SERIES: This is the 68th game in the all-time series between Augsburg and Hamline, a series the Pipers lead 40-25-2. Augsburg has won the last four games in a row in the series -- a 28-17 win at the Metrodome last season, a 19-13, 2-overtime win at Augsburg in 2005, a 40-6 win at Hamline in 2004 and a 23-6 win at the Metrodome in 2003. Augsburg has won 11 of the last 13 games in the series. Hamline's last win over the Auggies came in a 21-13 win at the Metrodome in 2002. The all-time series dates to Augsburg's first year of football, 1926 (a 19-0 Hamline win), and the teams have played each other every year since 1954.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped to 4-5 with a 44-35 loss to Bethel at the Metrodome on Friday. Hamline scored a 41-34, overtime win at St. Thomas on Saturday to improve to 3-6 on the season.
LAST YEAR: Augsburg claimed a 28-17 victory over Hamline on Nov. 9, 2006 at the Metrodome.
PLAYING FOR 'THE HAMMER': Saturday's contest is the third in the new series for "The Hammer" between Augsburg and Hamline. The trophy game began in 2005,
Frank Haege's first year as head coach at Augsburg. Haege was trying to come up with ideas for generating some fun with the series between the two metro-area schools, and playing for a trophy came to mind. But what trophy to use? Haege found it in a hammer trophy used by the coaching staff in 2004 and awarded to the special teams player of the week.
The trophy has a maroon handle and gray head, similar to the school colors of both schools -- maroon and gray for Augsburg, burgundy and gray for Hamline. It will be be guarded during the game by the athletic trainer of the winning school from the previous year, so Augsburg athletic trainer
Missy Strauch will do the honors at this year's game, with Hamline athletic trainer Jason Ellenbecker taking possession of it if the Pipers should win. The all-time series dates to Augsburg's first year of football, 1926 (a 19-0 Hamline win), and the teams have played each other every year since 1954.
Other football trophy games involving MIAC schools: the Goat Trophy (Carleton vs. St. Olaf); the Book of Knowledge (Carleton vs. Macalester); the Paint Bucket (Hamline vs. Macalester); the Victory Bell (Loras (Iowa) vs. St. Thomas); and the Wilson Brothers Cup (Hamline vs. St. Thomas).
CHANCE FOR .500 SEASON FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2003: Augsburg has shown dramatic improvement this season, the third under head coach
Frank Haege's leadership. Should Augsburg win on Saturday, it would finish at 5-5, its best record since finishing 5-5 in the 2003 season. The Auggies would also surpass the number of wins in the previous three seasons combined (4-26; 2-8 in 2004, 1-9 in 2005, 1-9 in 2006).
FINAL GAME FOR FIVE AUGSBURG SENIORS: Saturday's game will be the final contest for five Augsburg seniors:

David Lange (SR, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS), son of Laurel and Linda Lange. He is a business major.
Offensive lineman
Alan Mueller (SR, Savage, Minn./Breck HS), son of Randy and Linda Mueller. He is a psychology/business management major.
Defensive back
Justin Reese (SR, Missouri City, Texas/Westbury Christian HS), son of Sharon and Daryl Reese. He is a health and physical education major.

John Welty (SR, Edina, Minn.), son of Mark and Kim Welty. He is a marketing major.

ADAMSON, BATES, JUDKINS AMONG MIAC DEFENSIVE LEADERS: For the third straight year, an Augsburg player could end the regular season leading the MIAC in overall tackles. Entering this week's play, free safety
Garrett Adamson (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) currently stands first among MIAC players in overall tackles (92, 42 solo, 10.2 tackles per-game). Meanwhile, Augsburg linebacker
Donovan Bates (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) has 85 tackles (31 solo, 9.4 tackles per-game), which currently stands third among MIAC players. The last two seasons, Augsburg linebacker

Adamson also is tied for the MIAC lead in overall interceptions, with five. Bethel's Brandon Carr also has five interceptions. Meanwhile, teammate
Tyler Judkins (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) has four interceptions, tied for third among MIAC players in overall statistics with Hamline's Brody Anderson.
ANOTHER FAMILIAR FACE ON THE SIDELINES: Last season, Augsburg welcomed Jim Roback back to the coaching staff for his second stint as defensive coordinator. This season, Roback is joined on the defensive staff by another familiar face, former Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg. Augsburg's all-time winningest coach (62-79 from 1991-2004), Osberg is returning as defensive line coach. He also serves the college as assistant director of Alumni Relations.
LAST YEAR:
Jordan Berg threw for 346 yards and a touchdown, and
Andy Roff returned an interception 62 yards for the game-clinching score midway through the fourth quarter, as Augsburg finished its season with a 28-17 triumph over Hamline on Nov. 9, 2006 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Tight end Andrew Neumann caught 10 passes for 95 yards for the Auggies. Hamline put together 501 yards of total offense – 352 passing yards and 149 rushing yards – in a losing effort.
Berg completed 34-of-44 passes with one touchdown and one interception for the Auggies, his second 300-yard effort in the final three games of the season. He also rushed for a 7-yard touchdown in the final minute of the first half. Berg, who transferred to Augsburg this season from Minnesota-Duluth, finished the season with 2,107 passing yards – fourth-best in a single season in school history. His 208 completions and 349 passing attempts this year were both second-most in a single-season in Augsburg history.
Four Auggies gained 60 or more receiving yards, led by Neumann's 95 yards on 10 catches. He became the fourth Augsburg player – and first tight end -- to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in career receiving yards, finishing with 2,006 career yards on 186 receptions (second-most in school history).
Royce Winford caught eight passes for 83 yards,
Mike Nourie caught six passes for 91 yards, and
Ricky Schreier caught six passes for 63 yards, including a 20-yard scoring reception from Berg in the second quarter. Schreier finished his career with 1,563 receiving yards on 140 catches.

Hamline used two quarterbacks in the game in place of injured regular James Leary. Cohlman Rutschow completed 14-of-24 passes for 209 yards, while Chad Schmigel completed 9-of-11 passes for 143 yards.
Augsburg's defense picked off a season-high three passes, including the 62-yard interception for a score by Roff.
Tyler Judkins and
Pat Hoban also had interceptions.
Mike Matson led all players with 13 tackles (five solo), including a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. He finished his Auggie career with 355 tackles (146 solo), including 110 (46 solo) this season. Hoban had 11 tackles (four solo), and

Humphrey Metrodome. Augsburg quarterback
Jordan Berg (JR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) reached the 60-pass plateau for the third straight game, completing 35-of-69 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns, two to
Mike Nourie (SO, Nicollet, Minn.) and two to
Royce Winford (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS).
In the process, Berg broke three single-season passing records, becoming the first Augsburg quarterback ever to throw for 3,000 or more yards in a single season. He now has 3,030 yards, breaking the old mark of 2,951, set in 1997 by Derrin Lamker. Berg also set new single-season school records for passing attempts (466, the old record was 413 by Lamker in 1997) and pass completions (268, the old record was 247 by Lamker in 1997). Berg had already set a single-season mark for passing touchdowns earlier this season; he now has 30 on the season.
The game was a close one throughout. Bethel led 28-14 at halftime, but Augsburg cut the lead to two points in the fourth quarter at 37-35, after second-half touchdown passes to Winford (8 yards) and two to Nourie (12 and 4 yards).
After Nourie's second touchdown catch of the day cut the lead to 37-35, Bethel drove 55 yards to the Augsburg 4-yard line, but a fourth-down rush was stopped at the 2-yard line by
Garrett Adamson (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and
Adam Mead (FY, St. Francis, Minn.). Augsburg then drove the length of the field to set up a possible go-ahead score, but a Berg pass was intercepted by Bethel's Brandon Carr at the Bethel 4-yard line with 2:55 left in the fourth quarter. Bethel then drove 96 yards in five plays for the game-clinching score, a six-yard rush by Jared Bangs with 1:59 left.
For Augsburg, Nourie caught 10 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, and
Muneer Al-Hameed (FY, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught eight passes for 104 yards. Winford, the leading receiver in both receptions and receiving yardage in Division III football entering the game, saw his streak of 100-yard receiving games halted at four, but still caught nine passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Winford went over the 2,000-yard mark for career receiving yardage in Friday's game. He now has 2,031 career receiving yards on 148 catches and 22 touchdowns. This season, Winford stands second in school history in single-season receptions (95, record is 112 by Scott Hvistendahl in 1998), third in single-season receiving touchdowns (14, the record is 15 by Hvistendahl in both 1998 and 1997) and third in single-season receiving yardage (1,291, the record is 1,860, set by Hvistendahl in 1998).

SCOUTING THE PIPERS (from the MIAC Weekly Notebook): Quarterback James Leary (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was the driving force in the Piper's 41-34 double-overtime defeat of St. Thomas on the road on Saturday, providing Hamline a victory over St. Thomas for the first time since 1995. The win was also the Pipers' first conference Leary was instrumental in bringing the Pipers back even with the Tommies each time they trailed, and scored the game-winning touchdown in the second overtime. He totaled 40 yards on the ground and had 107 yards passing, including completions of 28, 22 and 16 yards.
Outside linebacker Brian Dorn's (SO, Maplewood, Minn.) heads-up playing in Hamline's win over St. Thomas on Saturday provided a spark to keep the momentum in the Pipers' favor and directly led to three key touchdowns. Dorn tallied nine tackles (six solo, three assists), a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception, a blocked punt recovery, and a touchdown in the game.
