BLAINE, Minn. (12/1/07) -- Scoring three goals in a 5:11 span midway through the second period and an empty-net goal in the closing seconds, the Bethel University men's hockey team overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit and claimed a 4-2 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday night at the Schwan Super Rink.
After Brett Way (JR, Grand Ledge, Mich.) and Jim Jensen (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) scored goals in a 2:06 span late in the first period for Augsburg (0-7-1 overall, 0-4-0 MIAC), Bethel (7-2-0 overall, 2-2-0 MIAC) responded with three goals midway through the second period, from Brad Peterson (JR, Bloomington, Minn.), Kent Bostrom (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and Christian Fogerty (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.). Matt Hall (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) finished the game with an empty-net goal with six seconds left in the third period.
Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 34-19 margin, including a 16-4 margin in the first period. Aaron Damjanovich (SO, Remer, Minn.) collected 32 saves for the win for the Royals, while Adam Hendel (JR, Bay City, Wis./Red Wing (Minn.) HS) had 15 saves in a losing effort for Augsburg.
Way scored from Kurt Hogard (JR, Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS) at the 13:45 mark of the first period, and Jensen scored from Dan Carlson (SR, Roseville, Minn.) and Ben Bradbury (JR, Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate HS) at the 15:51 mark.
Peterson scored from Brent Kettelkamp (JR, Richfield, Minn./Breck HS) and John Kovacs (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) at the 10:04 mark of the second period, followed by Bostrom's goal from Hall and Dan Bonne (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) at the 11:55 mark and Fogerty's goal from Steve Eastman (SR, Edina, Minn.) and Jeff Balvin (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) at the 15:15 mark.
Both teams have MIAC series next weekend (Friday-Saturday 12/7-8), as Augsburg faces St. Thomas and Bethel faces St. John's.
