ST. CLOUD, Minn. (12/8/07) -- Claiming two individual champions and nine placewinners among its 11 wrestlers in competition, the Augsburg College wrestling team competed at the St. Cloud State University Husky Open on Saturday at Halenbeck Hall.
Travis Lang (JR, Bismarck, N.D.) improved to 11-1 on the season with a dominating performance to win the 133-pound weight class. He recorded two first-period pins and a 17-0, second-period technical-fall to reach the finals, where he topped John Putman of Minnesota State Mankato 6-2.
At 149, Willy Holst (SO, Prescott, Wis.) improved to 10-0 on the season with five victories to claim the title. Holst, ranked No. 2 nationally in the latest Division III national rankings, opened his tournament with two pins and a 15-0, second-period technical-fall, then claimed two decisions over MSU Mankato wrestlers, a 6-4 win over Willy Mekell (wrestling unattached) in the semifinals and a 7-3 win over Tommy Abbott in the finals.
Seth Flodeen * (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally at 125 pounds, suffered his first loss of the season in the finals, falling 9-8 to University of Minnesota wrestler (wrestling unattached) Zach Sanders in the finals. Flodden scored three pins and a default win to reach the finals, and is now 7-1 on the season.
Jason Adams (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Lucas Murray (FY, Anoka, Minn.) shared third place at 141, while Robbie Gotreau (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), ranked No. 2 nationally in Division III at 184, placed fourth in the competitive field. Andy Witzel (SO, Fulda, Minn.) placed fourth at heavyweight, and Matt Curtis (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Brandon Klukow (JR, Albert Lea, Minn.) shared fifth place at 165.
The Augsburg White Team (junior varsity) finished fifth at the Wartburg (Iowa) Dick Walker Invitational on Saturday, where it claimed five placewinners. Paul Bjorkstrand (JR, Burnsville, Minn., 133) and Danny Manley (SR, Kearny, N.J., 197) finished fourth in their weight classes, while Jaime Rocha (JR, Santa Maria, Calif./Righetti HS, 125) and Garrett Long (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS, 184) finished fifth, and Brian Fischer (SR, Freedom, Wis., 174) placed sixth.
Augsburg is now off until Dec. 28-29, when it competes at the Sunshine Open Tournament in Lakeland, Fla.
