EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (2/3/07) -- With six individual champions and 12 placewinners, the Augsburg College wrestling team claimed the team championship at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday. Augsburg also recorded six placewinners in competition at the St. John's University North Country Invitational in Collegeville, Minn., on Saturday.
The Auggies, ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division III national rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, won the team title at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational with 347 team points. Wisconsin-La Crosse, ranked No. 3 in the Division III poll, was second with 205 points. There were no team points kept at the North Country Invitational.
Quincy Osborn (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.), ranked No. 1 in the Division III individual national rankings at 141, claimed pins in his first three matches and a decision in the championship match to claim the title at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire meet. Osborn now has 19 pins on the season and is 36-2 on the year.
At 157, top-ranked
Jeremy Anderson (Jr., Thief River Falls, Minn.) dominated the bracket, with three major decisions and a first-period pin. Anderson is now 31-2 on the season.
At 174,
Robbie Gotreau (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), ranked No. 3 nationally, scored four victories, including a technical fall, to win the title, improving to 34-4 on the season.
Seth Flodeen (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.), ranked No. 3 at 125, scored a technical fall and major decision among his three victories in winning his title. He is now 28-4 on the season.
Jared Evans (Sr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS), ranked No. 4 nationally at 149, claimed two major decisions along the way to his weight-class title, improving to 30-3.
George Lynaugh (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) improved to 25-5 on the season with three victories, including two pins, in claiming the crown at 184.
At 165, top-ranked
Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) won his first three matches, including two first-period pins, but received an injury forfeit and did not compete in the championship match. An injury forfeit does not count against an individual's record, so LeVesseur remains unbeaten both on the season (22-0) and in his collegiate career (146-0). LeVesseur, who won Division III national titles at 157 pounds three times (2003, 2004, 2005), has the second-longest winning streak in college wrestling history, behind the 159 of Cael Sanderson at Iowa State (1998-2002).
Wally O'Connor (Jr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) placed second at 197 pounds for the Auggies, while
Paul Bjorkstrand (So., Burnsville, Minn.) placed second at 133.
Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.), ranked No. 7 at heavyweight, suffered a first-round loss but recovered with four straight victories to place third in his weight class.
Josh Hansen (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) placed third at 157, as did Jaime Rocha (Jr., Santa Maria, Calif./Righetti HS) at 125.
Augsburg has its final dual meet of the season on Friday (2/9) at 7 p.m., with a meet at No. 21-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
