MINNEAPOLIS (2/5/07) -- Isaac Rosefelt (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) scored 26 points with 12 rebounds and six blocked shots, leading the University of St. Thomas to an 80-75 win in two overtimes over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Monday night at Si Melby Hall.
Bryan Schnettler (Sr., Sartell, Minn.) scored 25 points – 11 points in the 10 minutes of overtime – for the Tommies, now 20-2 overall, 16-1 in MIAC play. St. Thomas entered the game ranked No. 3 in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national poll. Lonnie Robinson (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) had 10 points, five assists and four steals for the Tommies.
Augsburg (8-13 overall, 5-11 MIAC) was paced by
Femi Solaja (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Paul Harding HS), who had 23 points and 15 rebounds.
Chuck Scott * (Sr., Ely, Minn.) had 13 points, three rebounds and four assists, and
Jon Cassens (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) scored 11 points with six assists.
The game was a close one throughout, as neither team led by more than nine points. Augsburg used a 15-4 run to take its largest lead of nine points, 29-20, with 2:26 left in the first half. Augsburg led 29-24 at halftime.
St. Thomas used a 7-2 run in the first 2:14 of the second half to tie the game at 31-31, but Augsburg scored 10 of the next 13 points to take a 41-34 advantage with 14:13 left in regulation. Neither team led by more than four points in the rest of the second half, and after Rosefelt hit two free throws with 18 seconds left, Cassens connected on a three-pointer with four seconds left to tie the game at 60-60, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, Schnettler scored five of the Tommies' seven points, while Solaja scored four points for Augsburg and Cassens connected on a three-point play with 1:16 remaining.
In the second overtime, St. Thomas connected on its free throws – hitting 7-of-8 from the line – to take the lead, eventually outscoring the Auggies 13-8 to claim the win.
In the game, St. Thomas connected on 21-of-26 at the free-throw line, while Augsburg went to the line just nine times, hitting seven shots. St. Thomas connected on 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field, including 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Augsburg hit 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the field, including 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) from long range. Augsburg outrebounded St. Thomas by a 47-33 margin.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday (2/7), with Augsburg playing at St. John's at 7:30 p.m., and St. Thomas playing at Gustavus at 5:45 p.m.
