St. John's overcomes early deficit, tops Augsburg 67-54

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/5/07) -- Craig Schafer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) scored 16 points and Matt Ohme (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) added 13 points to lead St. John's University to a 67-54 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Wednesday at Sexton Arena.

Brady Brink (Jr., Waconia, Minn./Waconia) added 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for the Johnnies (18-5, 16-2 MIAC) who now see themselves atop the MIAC standings after No. 3-ranked St. Thomas' 80-74 overtime loss at Gustavus Adolphus earlier this evening.

Femi Solaja (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Paul Harding HS) poured in 16 points and added 14 rebounds for his second straight double-double to lead the Auggies (8-14, 5-12 MIAC), while teammate Jon Cassens (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) added 13 points with four rebounds and two assists. Chuck Scott * (Sr., Ely, Minn.) and Zach Krumwiede (Fr., Trimont, Minn./Martin County West HS) scored nine points apiece, with Krumwiede adding four assists and Scott adding four rebounds.

Augsburg jumped out to an early lead, holding a 23-12 advantage at the 10:38 mark of the first half. But St. John's closed the gap and took a 29-27 lead at halftime. The Johnnies pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Auggies 38-27 and leading by as many as 14 points down the stretch.

St. John's shot 40.6 percent (26-of-64) from the field in the game, while Augsburg shot 39.2 percent (20-of-51). St. John's outrebounded Augsburg by a 38-32 margin. The Johnnies committed just five turnovers, while Augsburg committed 14 turnovers, which the Johnnies converted into 22 points.

St. John's will return to action next Wednesday (2/14) against Hamline in Collegeville, while Augsburg will play host to St. Mary's on Saturday (2/10) at 1 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
