Auggies win third game in a row, 3-2 over MIAC-leader Gustavus

MINNEAPOLIS (2/9/07) -- A.J. Hau (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) recorded a goal and an assist, and Andy Kent (So., Lakeville, Minn.) collected 24 saves in goal, as the Augsburg College men's hockey team claimed a 3-2 victory over visiting Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Aaron Johnson * (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two assists, and Critter Nagurski * (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) and Greg May (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) scored the other goals for Augsburg, now 8-8-4 overall, 5-2-4 in MIAC play. Augsburg has won three straight games.

Jon Keseley (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Tim Ornell (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored goals for Gustavus, which fell to 10-11-1 overall, 8-5-0 in MIAC play. Gustavus entered this weekend's play leading in the MIAC standings.

Gustavus and Augsburg complete the MIAC weekend series on Saturday (2/10) at 7:05 p.m. at Gustavus.

Augsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, as May scored from Hau and Johnson at the 3:28 mark, and Nagurski scored his team-high 14th goal of the season from Tim Lawson (Jr., Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer HS) at the 15:44 mark.

But just 36 seconds after Nagurski's goal, Keseley cut the lead to one goal with his 11th tally of the season, from Eric Bigham (Fr., Robbinsdale, Minn.).

Augsburg took a 3-1 lead at the 7:01 mark of the second period, as Hau scored from Johnson and Chad Georgell * (Sr., North Pole, Alaska/Fairbanks Lathrop HS). But Gustavus again cut the lead to one goal, as with just two seconds left on a 5-on-3 power play, Ornell scored from Ben Ollila (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Mike Hosfield (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).

Gustavus had six power-play opportunities in the game, scoring once, while Augsburg was scoreless on its three power-play opportunities.

Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 26-24 margin, but Kent claimed 24 saves to improve to 7-6-4 on the season. Kevin Johnson (So., Montrose, Minn.) collected 21 saves in a losing effort.
