STEVENS POINT, Wis. (2/9/07) -- Claiming wins in nine of 10 matches, Augsburg College claimed a 38-6 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a wrestling dual meet on Friday night at UWSP's Berg Gym.
Augsburg, now 11-1 in dual meets, entered the match ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III national poll (National Wrestling Coaches Association), while Wisconsin-Stevens Point (11-8-1 overall) was ranked No. 21. Augsburg leads the all-time series with Wisconsin-Stevens Point 14-1, in a series that dates to the 1992-93 season.
Against teams from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 218-17 since the 1989-90 season, losing just 12 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. Against teams from Division III, Augsburg is now 229-20 since the 1979-80 season and 153-10 since 1989-90. Augsburg has won nine Division III national titles in the last 16 seasons.
Augsburg claimed one pin, a technical fall and three major decisions among its nine victories. Augsburg's
Quincy Osborn (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.), ranked No. 1 in the country at 141, notched his 20th pin of the season with a 6:52 match-ender over Kyle Mueller, improving to 37-2 on the season.
Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), ranked No. 1 nationally at 165, maintained his unbeaten collegiate record with a 21-6, technical fall victory over Chris Karl. LeVesseur, who won Division III national titles at 157 pounds three times (2003, 2004, 2005), improved to 23-0 on the season and improved his collegiate career record to 147-0, the second-longest winning streak in college wrestling history, behind the 159 of Cael Sanderson at Iowa State (1998-2002).
Augsburg's
George Lynaugh (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), currently unranked at 184 pounds, claimed a 10-3 victory over the Pointers' Craig Bollig, ranked No. 5 in the latest national poll.
Augsburg's
Jafari Vanier (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), ranked No. 1 nationally at 133, improved to 15-1 on the season with a 19-8, major-decision win over Jered Kern.
Seth Flodeen (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.), ranked No. 3 at 125, scored a 9-0, major-decision win over Jake Calhoun. Also claiming a major-decision win was
Jared Evans (Sr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS), ranked No. 4 at 149, with a 9-1 triumph over Fred Lane.
Augsburg's
Jeremy Anderson (Jr., Thief River Falls, Minn.), top-ranked at 157, collected a 5-1 win over
Chris Brown, and
Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.), ranked No. 7 at heavyweight, topped Mitch Szwet 4-2. Augsburg's
Robbie Gotreau (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), ranked No. 3 nationally at 174, scored an injury-default win.
The Pointers' only win came at 197, where Dustin Robinson pinned Augsburg's
Wally O'Connor (Jr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS).
Augsburg will attempt to qualify wrestlers to the national championships next Saturday (2/17) at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional at Elmhurst (Ill.) College. Wisconsin-Stevens Point wraps up its dual-meet season this Saturday (2/10) at 11 a.m., hosting Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
