Augsburg opens Greater Phoenix Invitational with split with Buena Vista (Iowa), losing 9-2 and winning 4-2.

MESA, Ariz. (3/19/07) -- The Augsburg College baseball team opened its play in the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Monday with a doubleheader split with Buena Vista University (Iowa) at Gene Autry Park, falling 9-2 in the first game and winning 4-2 in the second game. Augsburg is now 3-5 on the season, while Buena Vista is 2-1.

In the second contest, Augsburg's Rick Andersen (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 2-for-3, scoring a run and driving in the last run of the game on a double in the fourth inning. Derek Goodnature (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) also went 2-for-3 in the second game for the Auggies.

A run-scoring single by Mike Zaun (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) gave the Auggies an early lead, but Buena Vista tied the game with a run in the second inning and took the lead in the third with a run. But Augsburg scored twice in the bottom of the third inning, on a two-run single by Keith Canter (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), and Andersen's RBI double in the fourth finished the scoring.

Shawn Sanders (So., St. Charles, Minn.) pitched two innings of relief to score the win, after starter Brian Olson (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) pitched three innings. Sam Weber (Fr., Mounds View, Minn.) pitched the last two innings in relief.

In the first game, a three-run third inning and four-run fifth inning gave Buena Vista a commanding lead. Alex Glasenapp (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) started and took the loss for the Auggies, striking out three. Tyler Kraft * (Sr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and Alex Gustafson (So., Anoka, Minn.) also pitched in relief.

Craig Henry (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the first game, scoring a run. Mark Pederson (Jr., Lexington, Minn./Centennial HS) drove in a run on a single in the second inning, an Nate Jackson (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) drove in a run on a groundout in the third.

Augsburg faces Albright College (Pa.) in a doubleheader on Tuesday (3/20) at 12 p.m. at Gene Autry Field.
