MESA, Ariz. (3/20/07) -- The Augsburg College baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Greater Phoenix Invitational, falling to Albright College (Pa.) 12-6 and 4-2 at Gene Autry Field. Augsburg is now 3-7 on the season, while Albright is 5-1.
In the first game, Albright used a four-run third inning and five-run sixth inning to pull away from the Auggies.
Derek Goodnature (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) started on the mound for the Auggies, and was relieved by
Tyler Kraft * (Sr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and
Shawn Sanders (So., St. Charles, Minn.).
Augsburg scored four runs in the third inning, keyed by a three-run triple by
Mark Pederson (Jr., Lexington, Minn./Centennial HS) and a run-scoring single by
Jason Kickhafer (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS). In the fourth inning,
Ricky Schreier * (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) tripled and scored on a single by
Andy Nelson * (Sr., Waseca, Minn.), and in the sixth inning, a fielder's choice by Schreier plated a run. Schreier went 2-for-4 in the game to lead the Auggies.
In the second game, Albright used a three-run second inning to take the lead for good off of Augsburg starter Kickhafer, who struck out three in five innings of work. Dave Rasmussen (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) pitched an inning of relief.
Augsburg scored twice in the sixth inning, as singles by
Aaron Hazen (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Mike Zaun (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) drove in runs. Zaun went 2-for-3 to lead the Auggies in the second game.
Augsburg faces Massachusetts-Boston in a doubleheader on Wednesday (3/21) at 11:30 a.m. at Gene Autry Field.
