CHANDLER, Ariz. (3/23/07) -- Scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Augsburg College baseball team rallied to claim a 5-4 victory over Williams College (Mass.) in action at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Friday at Snedigar Park. Augsburg is now 6-8 on the season, while Williams is now 3-2.
Trailing 4-2, Augsburg opened the ninth innning with back-to-back walks, and
Dusty Hinz (So., Richfield, Minn.) and
Nate Jackson (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) then hit run-scoring singles to tie the game. The game-winning run came across on a passed ball following a third strike.
Jackson had two hits for the Auggies, as did
Rick Andersen (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who hit a double in the sixth inning and hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, in the eighth. Augsburg also scored a single run in the fifth inning, as
Jeff Stomberg (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored following a throwing error.
Shawn Sanders (So., St. Charles, Minn.) scored the pitching win for the Auggies, throwing three innings of one-hit relief, striking out one.
Sam Weber (Fr., Mounds View, Minn.) started and struck out four in four innings of work, and
Brian Olson (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) pitched two innings of relief.
Augsburg finishes its spring trip with a doubleheader against the University of Chicago (Ill.) on Saturday (3/24) at 2 p.m. at Mesa Community College.
