MESA, Ariz. (3/24/07) -- The Augsburg College baseball team closed its play at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Chicago (Ill.) at Mesa Community College, claiming a 1-0 win in the opener and a 15-5 triumph in the second game. Augsburg is now 7-8 overall, having won its last four games to finish its Arizona trip with a 5-4 record. Chicago is now 2-7 on the season.
In the first game, Augsburg pitcher
Jason Kickhafer (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out three while walking three. The lone hit for the Maroons was a single in the fourth inning.
Augsburg scored its lone run in the third inning, as
Mark Pederson (Jr., Lexington, Minn./Centennial HS) reached base on an error and scored on a single by
Jeff Stomberg (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Stomberg went 2-for-3 for the Auggies, while
Ricky Schreier * (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) went 3-for-4.
In the second game, Augsburg rallied from a 5-1, fourth-inning deficit with 14 runs in the final three innings to score the win. Augsburg scored seven runs in the fourth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and collecting six hits. Augsburg scored a single run in the fifth inning and scored six runs on eight hits in the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate.
Mike Zaun (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Stomberg each went 3-for-3 for the Auggies, and each drove in three runs. Kickhafer also had three RBI in the game, and Jackson and
Mark Bauer (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had two hits each. Bauer and Stomberg had doubles for the Auggies. Ten different Auggies had hits in the game, and nine players scored runs.
Tyler Kraft * (Sr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) scored the pitching win for the Auggies, relieving starter
Derek Goodnature (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) and pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four while walking one and allowing four hits. Goodnature struck out two in 3.2 innings of work.
Augsburg returns to nonconference action on Thursday (3/29) with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
