DECORAH, Iowa (3/28/07) -- After scoring three runs on four hits in the first inning to take a 3-2 lead, Luther College produced two hits in the next six innings and was defeated by Augsburg College 6-3 in the first game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader on Thursday at Luther. However, the Norse won the second game, 10-5, to gain the doubleheader split.

Augsburg designated hitter Mike Zaun (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) drove in three runs with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Zaun drove in two runs in the first with a double and one in the fifth with a single. Craig Henry (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 2-for-4 for the Auggies, while Andy Nelson * (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) scored three runs.

Kyle Schroeder produced two hits for the Norse and was credited with one run and one RBI. Ben Schott and Nate Neis also drove in runs.

Both Augsburg pitchers claimed career milestones in the win. Chris Purcell (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) picked up his first collegiate pitching victory, pitching four innings. Alex Glasenapp (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) claimed his first collegiate save, with three innings of one-hit, scoreless pitching in relief. Joe Nelson was credited with the loss. Nelson pitched 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out three. Only two of the four runs he allowed were earned.

In the second game, the Norse played long ball, hitting three home runs en route to a 10-5 victory. Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the second, Jeff Hiatt hit a grand slam over the right-centerfield fence. Three innings later, Schott hit a solo home run, and Troy Peterson completed the barrage with a three-run home run in the sixth. The Norse tallied 11 hits in the nightcap.

Nate Jackson (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) hit a home run for the Auggies in the second game. Mark Bauer (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Henry and Jeff Stomberg (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) hit doubles for the Auggies. Brian Bambenek * (Sr., St. Charles, Minn.) drove in two runs.

Max Flaig (2-0) was credited with the win. Flaig pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed five runs on six hits, walked four and struck out two. Jeff Riddle was credited with his second save of the year. Riddle allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of work. Jon-Eric Urseth (So., Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), one of four Augsburg pitchers in the game, took the loss.

The split gives Luther an overall record of 9-4, while Augsburg fell to 8-9 overall.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (3/31), facing Hamline in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Metrodome in Minneapolis (note change of site). The Norse return to action on Sunday (4/1), hosting St. Mary's University in a nonconference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
