MINNEAPOLIS (3/7/07) -- Ryan Stace (So., Oregon, Wis.) went 4-for-5 with a double and triple, driving in one run while scoring two, and Tim Schneider (Jr., West Salem, Wis./Onalaska Lutheran HS) went 4-for-6 at the plate with a double, driving in two runs and scoring two, as the University of Wisconsin-Stout claimed a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg College in nonconference baseball action on Wednesday morning at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Andy Nelson * (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI in the doubleheader for the Auggies, now 2-2 on the season.
Dusty Hinz (So., Richfield, Minn.) had a double and drove in two runs, and
Bobby Hager (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) had a double and scored a run.
Ricky Schreier * (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored twice for the Auggies in the doubleheader.
Augsburg took early leads in each game, only to have Wisconsin-Stout (3-1 overall) rally to take the lead each time. Augsburg scored three runs in the third inning of the first game, keyed on a two-run single by Nelson. But Wisconsin-Stout matched the three runs in the top of the fourth inning, as a throwing error, sacrifice fly by Erik Johnson (Jr., La Crosse, Wis./Central HS) and a single by Schneider plated the runs.
The teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning, but the Blue Devils took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs. A leadoff triple by Stace started the frame, followed by a sacrifice fly by Mike White (Jr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS). Run-scoring single by Tanner Kattre (Jr., Abbotsford, Wis.) and Johnson followed.
In the second game, Augsburg took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, only to have the Blue Devils score six unanswered runs. Schreier led of the game with a single, then stole second and third bases in succession. A sacrifice fly by Hinz plated Schreier, and after a Nelson walk, he came across on a sacrifice fly by
Rick Andersen (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).
A two-run triple by White tied the game in the second inning, and an RBI double by Stace and run-scoring single by White in the fourth gave the Blue Devils the lead to stay. Two more runs came across in the fifth on a wild pitch and RBI single by Schneider.
Reliever Joe Chittum (So., Wausau, Wis./West HS) picked up the win in the first game, with Ben Sivertson (Jr., Elk Mound, Wis.) recording the save. Wisconsin-Stout used four pitchers in the second game, with Nate Hanson (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) scoring the win.
Augsburg used four pitchers in the first game and three pitchers in the second game.
Alex Glasenapp (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and
Shawn Sanders (So., St. Charles, Minn.) struck out three batters apiece for the Auggies in the second game.
Augsburg returns to the Metrodome on Friday (3/9) with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader against Wisconsin-Whitewater. Wisconsin-Stout returns to the Metrodome on Sunday (3/11) with a 9:15 p.m. doubleheader against St. Thomas.
