MINNEAPOLIS (3/9/07) -- Ben Kuhlmann (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) hit a solo home run and Mike Jacobson (Jr., Oak Creek, Wis.) struck out seven in a complete-game effort in the second game, as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater completed a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg College, rallying to win both games on Friday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
The Warhawks (3-1 overall), ranked No. 12 in the preseason American Baseball Coaches Association Division III national poll, scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally from a 6-5 deficit in the first game, and rallied from a 1-0 deficit with a run in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning of the second game.
Augsburg (2-4 overall) rallied from a 5-0 second-inning deficit to take a lead in the first game, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the seventh.
Ricky Schreier * (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) led the Auggies with a 4-for-9 effort in the doubleheader, with two doubles and three runs scored.
In the second game, Augsburg took the lead in the third inning, as Schreier doubled and scored on a single by
Craig Henry (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Starting pitcher
Jason Kickhafer (So., Cottage Grove, Minn.) held the Warhawks scoreless until the sixth inning, when Kuhlmann hit a one-out homer to right field to tie the game.
In the seventh inning, Jeff Donovan (Fr., Wauwatosa, Wis./East HS) led off with a ground-rule double to center and scored after Kevin Zalnis (So., Woodstock, Ill.) reached base on a throwing error. Matt Schliewe (Jr., Horicon, Wis.) then singled to drive in pinch-runner Greg Harder (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./East HS). Augsburg had the eventual tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score against Jacobson.
In the first game, the Warhawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead, including a two-run single by Kuhlmann and an RBI single by Ben Prather (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill./Conant HS) in the second inning.
But Augsburg scored twice in the fifth inning, as Schreier reached base, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a groundout by
Andy Nelson * (Sr., Waseca, Minn.).
Bobby Hager (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) then scored on a single by
Nate Jackson (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) with two outs.
The Auggies took the lead in the top of the seventh, as Schreier doubled, Nelson singled and both scored on a double to right field by Jackson. Two more runs came across on an error and a bases-loaded hit batter.
In the bottom of the inning, Harder led off being hit by a pitch, and he eventually came around to score on a pinch-hit single by Zalnis. A fielder's choice by Kuhlmann then enabled the game-winning run to score, as pinch-runner Sam Petrasko (Fr., Appleton, Wis./East HS) scored.
Schreier was 3-for-5 in the first game, while Jackson was 2-for-4 at the plate. The Warhawks spread out their seven hits in the first game among seven different hitters. Kuhlmann drove in three runs and Prather drove in two.
Augsburg is now off until its spring break week (March 19-24), when it has 10 games at the Greater Phoenix Invitational in Mesa, Ariz., and Chandler, Ariz. Wisconsin-Whitewater is scheduled to host Wheaton (Ill.) in a doubleheader on March 17 at 12 p.m. in Whitewater.
