MINNEAPOLIS (4/18/07) -- Ethan Guevin (So., Davis, Calif.) struck out six in a complete-game effort for the win for Carleton College in the first game, while
Jon-Eric Urseth (So., Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) also struck out six to record a complete-game win for Augsburg College in the second game, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday at Parade Stadium.
Carleton (11-10 overall, 3-5 MIAC) scored all seven of its runs in the seventh inning of the first game to claim a 7-2 victory, while Augsburg (13-14 overall, 5-5 MIAC) scored a 14-3 win in the second game to earn the split.
Augsburg scored twice in the fifth inning of the first game, as
Andy Nelson * (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) singled to drive in
Jeff Stomberg (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), while
Brian Bambenek * (Sr., St. Charles, Minn.) scored as a result of a throwing error on the same play.
But Carleton sent 11 batters to the plate and claimed seven hits, while taking advantage of two Auggie errors to score seven runs in the top of the seventh. After a run came across on an error, a suicide-squeeze bunt by Nick Shepard (Sr., New York, N.Y./Fieldston School) plated the tying run. A sacrifice fly by Cameron McDonald-Hyman (So., Muir Beach, Calif./Tamalpais HS) drove in the go-ahead run, and an RBI single by Russ Fujisawa (Fr., Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield HS), a two-run triple by Rob Trettin (So., Superior Wis.) and a fielding error brought the other runs home in the inning.
Ricky Schreier * (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and
Eric Olson * (Fr., New Prague, Minn.) had two hits each for Augsburg, while Fujisawa and Guevin had two hits each for the Knights.
Guevin threw 105 pitches to record the complete-game win, striking out six while allowing three walks and seven hits.
Jason Kickhafer (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) started and struck out seven while not walking a batter in 6.1 innings of work, but was charged with the loss.
Tyler Kraft * (Sr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) pitched in relief for the Auggies.
In the second game, Augsburg jumped out to a 4-2 lead, then placed 10 runs in the final three innings to pull away. RBI singles by
Aaron Hazen (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Dusty Hinz (So., Richfield, Minn.) brought in runs in the first. Bambenek stole home on a double-steal attempt, and a double by
Craig Henry (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) drove in another run.
Carleton cut into the lead in the third, as an RBI single by Fujisawa and a run-scoring triple by Trettin plated runs, and Jay Melson (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) hit a solo homer in the fourth.
But Augsburg scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending nine batters to the plate and using three hits and two errors to score its runs. A single by Hazen drove in Nelson, and a wild pitch brought in another run. A two-run single by
Derek Goodnature (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) and an RBI groundout accounted for the other runs.
In the fifth, three more runs came across, as a fielding error brought home two runs and a Hinz single plated another. In the sixth, Augsburg scored twice, on a wild pitch and a single by
Nate Jackson (Sr., Richfield, Minn.).
Nelson scored five runs for the Auggies in the second game, stealing four bases. Henry went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Hazen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Hinz and Jackson also had two hits each. McDonald-Hyman and Melson had two hits each for Carleton.
Augsburg's Urseth struck out six while not walking a batter and allowing eight hits to record the complete-game win. Aaron Troyansky (Fr., Lubbock, Texas) took the loss for the Knights, with Jake Riss (So., White Plains, N.Y.) and Shane Henfling (So., Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS) pitching in relief
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (4/21). Augsburg travels to Concordia-Moorhead for a 12 p.m. doubleheader, while Carleton hosts Macalester in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
