ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/28/07) --
Sam Weber (Fr., Mounds View, Minn.) threw a complete-game five-hitter for Augsburg College in the first game, while Macalester College pitchers James Murrey and Adam Wedwick limited the Auggies to five hits in the second game, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Macalester Field.
Augsburg (16-17 overall, 8-8 MIAC) won the first game 7-1, while Macalester (14-17 overall, 5-9 MIAC) won the second game 4-2. Augsburg is now a game behind St. John's (16-14 overall, 9-5 MIAC) for fourth place in the MIAC standings. The top four teams in the MIAC qualify for the league's postseason playoffs. St. John's was idle on Saturday and will host Carleton in a doubleheader on Sunday (4/29).
Weber struck out six while walking one in a complete-game effort, stranding five Scots runners on base in the first game. Macalester's lone run came on a solo homer by Chris Papalia in the third inning.
Meanwhile, Augsburg took advantage of seven hits, four walks and two Macalester fielding errors to score seven runs. In the first inning, a bases-loaded walk to
Mike Zaun (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) brought home
Andy Nelson * (Sr., Waseca, Minn.). In the third inning,
Aaron Hazen (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) hit a solo home run, and in the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly by Nelson brought home
Jeff Stomberg (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Augsburg sent seven batters to the plate and scored four runs in the sixth inning, with the key hit coming on a two-run double by
Craig Henry (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Two errors also brought home runs.
In the second game, Macalester's Murrey allowed five hits, while striking out six and walking one, in recording the victory. Both runs scored against him were unearned. Wedwick walked three but did not allow a hit or run in the seventh inning to score the save.
Macalester scored twice in the second inning, as Joe Borer doubled and scored on a throwing error, and Adam Kent singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Benjie Achtenberg. In the third inning, two more runs came across on a two-run single by Borer, driving home John Simkins and Wedwick.
Augsburg scored a single run in the third inning, as
Ricky Schreier * (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) singled and scored on a double-play grounder. The Auggies scored in the fourth, as a Stomberg single brought home
Jason Kickhafer (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS).
Chris Purcell (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) started and struck out four for Augsburg, allowing one walk and four hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Shawn Sanders (So., St. Charles, Minn.) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three while allowing two hits. Augsburg had just five hits in the game, but stranded 12 runners on base.
Augsburg is now off for its finals week, and will return to action on Thursday (5/3) at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader at St. Olaf. Macalester returns to action on Monday (4/30) with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead.
