MINNEAPOLIS (9/26/07) -- Katie Medd (Jr., Mankato, Minn./East HS) and Kristi Castelic (So., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) scored goals, and goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot * (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) recorded her 20th career shutout, as Augsburg College claimed a 2-0 victory over visiting St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game Wednesday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Medd scored her second goal of the season in the 14th minute, putting home a rebound after Jackie Keller * (Sr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) headed a corner kick from Mitra Rahimi * (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.). With 1:02 left in the first half, Augsburg drew a penalty kick on a foul in the penalty box, which Castelic converted for her second goal of the season.
Augsburg (4-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 MIAC) outshot St. Olaf (2-7-1 overall, 2-2-0 MIAC) by a 12-7 margin, and had a 7-1 corner-kick advantage.
DeGroot made one save in goal to pick up her second shutout of the season and 20th of her Augsburg career. DeGroot is third in career shutouts in Augsburg history; Laura Hoffman (2000-03) is in second with 23 shutouts and Beth Petrik (1995-98) holds the school record, with 26.
"I was proud of our team tonight. We played well and had great energy and effort," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "In particular, our seniors (Jackie Keller *, Angie Neuhaus, Noreen Hogan, Erin Gave and Mitra Rahimi *) stepped up and gave us the leadership we needed. We've been a little off lately, so it felt good to play well and fight hard for 90 minutes against a good St. Olaf team."
Jenny Wetzig (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had four shots for St. Olaf, while K.C. Beed (Fr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had three shots. Samantha Sickbert (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) collected five saves in goal for the Oles.
The game was delayed by an hour and 15 minutes, starting at 8:45 p.m., due to a thunderstorm that came through the area.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (9/29). Augsburg hosts St. Catherine at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, while St. Olaf hosts St. Benedict at 1 p.m.
"Nothing is easy in the MIAC. Now we have to prepare for another tough game against a much-improved and well-coached St. Catherine team," Navarre said.
