MINNEAPOLIS (9/4/07) -- Nick Manders * (Sr., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) and Andrew Seidel (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) scored first-half goals for Augsburg College, and goalkeeper Matt Carlson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) claimed his second straight shutout, as the Auggies recorded a 2-0 nonconference men's soccer victory over visiting Simpson College (Iowa) on Tuesday night at Edor Nelson Field.

Manders opened the scoring for Augsburg (2-1-0 overall) with a goal in the 30th minute, heading the ball in front of the net off a corner kick by Matt Bowman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.). In the 41st minute, Seidel took a pass from Andrew Connor (Sr., Becket, Mass./North Muskegon (Mich.) HS) and weaved between two defenders in the box, putting the ball to the lower right corner of the net.

"It was good to get on the board off a set piece. Matt Bowman has been serving some dangerous balls and it was a matter of time before Manders got on the end of one," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Andy Seidel was very dangerous and was composed on his strike. His effort defensively was what I was most excited about."

Augsburg outshot Simpson (0-2-1 overall) by a 27-9 margin, including a 17-3 edge in the first half. Augsburg also had 10 corner kicks to Simpson's two.

Carlson, a transfer from St. Thomas making his second start in goal for the Auggies, collected four saves in net for his second straight shutout and eighth of his career. Simpson goalkeeper Josh Youngman (So., Pella, Iowa) made 10 saves in a losing effort.

The Auggies controlled possession throughout the first half, but the Storm were able to present some challenges in the second half. In the 64th minute, a Simpson goal was disallowed after the officials ruled that the throw-in that led to the potential goal was an illegal one, as the Simpson thrower crossed the boundary line before throwing the ball.

"Our attitude in the first half was very good. As the game progressed, Simpson made it challenging for us to play the way we would like," Holker said. "We have to be better defending set pieces and we need to address some fitness issues in midfield."

Augsburg returns to action on Friday (9/7) at 7:30 p.m., with a nonconference game against Northwestern-Roseville at Edor Nelson Field. Simpson returns to action on Saturday (9/8) at 5:30 p.m., with a nonconference game at Nebraska Wesleyan.

"Overall it was a fair result. We will continue to find the right players for our team as the conference season nears," Holker said. "Friday's game against Northwestern will be another good test. They are always organized and hard-working, and traditionally give us a very hard time."
