Augsburg drops doubleheader at St. Olaf, falling 18-1 and 4-1.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/14/08) -- Taking advantage of a six-run second inning and nine-run fourth inning, the St. Olaf College baseball team scored an 18-1 victory over visiting Augsburg College in the opener, then took advantage of a one-hitter by pitcher Andy Dimick in a 4-1 victory in the second game of Tuesday afternoon's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mark Almli Field.

Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two of Augsburg's (13-11 overall, 5-3 MIAC) five hits in the doubleheader, including a run-scoring double in the first inning of the first game to drive in Al Davis (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS). Andersen also had the lone hit for the Auggies in the second game. 

Jeff Stomberg * (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored the lone run for the Auggies in the second game, as he was hit by a pitch, advanced to third base on an error and scored on a Davis groundout in the third inning.

Meanwhile, 10 different St. Olaf (13-6 overall, 3-0 MIAC) batters had hits, led by Sam Baltes, who went 5-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI, scoring three runs. Luke Gagnon had two doubles among his four hits, driving in four runs, and Josh Maus had four hits, including a double and home run. Todd Mathison also had four hits, including a double, driving in four runs.

Three different Auggies pitched in the first game, with starter Jason Kickhafer (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) taking the loss, lasting just two innings. Jon-Eric Urseth (JR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) pitched a complete-game effort for Augsburg in the second game, striking out one while not walking a batter. Just one of the four runs charged to him were earned, as Augsburg committed two errors in the game.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/16) at 2:30 p.m., with a doubleheader at Bethel. St. Olaf hosts St. Thomas on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
