Women's Soccer 10/22/08 -- Carleton 1, Augsburg 0
GAME BOXSCORE | AUGSBURG SEASON STATISTICS
MINNEAPOLIS (10/22/08) -- Mia Zutz (JR, Middleton, Wis.) slid behind the defense on a missed clearance attempt and put the ball in the net, giving Carleton College the only goal it would need in a 1-0 victory over host Augsburg College in a battle of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer playoff contenders on Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Linnea Carlson (FY, Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township HS) put the ball into the box in the 79th minute, and a clearing attempt was missed by the Augsburg defense. Zutz collected the ball in the middle of the box and put a shot past Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS).
The game was a battle between two of the contenders for the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs. With league-leader St. Thomas already clinching a playoff berth, Carleton (10-5-0 overall, 7-2-0 MIAC) now moves into sole possession of second place in the league standings with 14 points. Augsburg (9-3-4 overall, 4-1-4 MIAC) is now tied with Concordia-Moorhead and St. Benedict in third place with 12 points. The Auggies have qualified for the MIAC playoffs the last four straight years.
"That was a great college soccer game. Unfortunately, we lost and losing hurts," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Carleton took advantage of a bad bounce and an inability to clear and that cost us. Overall, we played well against a great team, but it's hard to find any solace in playing well right now."
Carleton controlled possession in the first half, outshooting Augsburg by an 8-4 margin. But the Auggies had several chances to score and played more of an even game with the Knights in the second half, with the Knights scoring a 10-6 shot advantage en route to an 18-10 margin overall.
Lacey Hoover (SO, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) had three shots to lead Augsburg, while Felicia Faison (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) had two shots apiece.
DeGroot collected eight saves in goal for the Auggies, while Kate Trenerry (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) had six saves for Carleton.
Augsburg has another crucial MIAC game on Saturday (10/25), hosting St. Benedict at 1 p.m. Carleton is also in action on Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting St. Catherine.
"We still have a good chance of getting into the playoffs, but we are running out of time," said Navarre, noting that Augsburg has two conference games remaining in the regular season. "We have to get a positive result on Saturday against St. Benedict in a huge game for both teams."
