Ray Wilson set a single-game school record with 258 rushing yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns, as the Gusties scored a 34-31 victory over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest on Saturday afternoon at Gustavus' Hollingsworth Field.
Wilson scored on a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter, then scored on an 81-yard run in the fourth quarter -- capping a four-play, 99-yard drive -- to give the Gusties a 34-24 lead with 6:52 left. Augsburg trimmed the lead to 34-31 on a four-yard pass from Berg to Winford with 4:53 left, but could not get the ball back as the Gusties were able to run out the clock.
Gustavus is now 5-2 overall, 3-2 in MIAC play, while Augsburg dropped to 4-3 overall, 2-3 in MIAC play, falling in its third straight game after starting the season 4-0.
Berg, already Augsburg's career record-holder in every passing category, edged closer to the 8,000-yard barrier in career passing yardage. He now has 7,935 passing yards in just his 27th collegiate game in three seasons at Augsburg (293.9 yards-per-game), completing 718-of-1,212 passes with 66 touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Winford edged closer to Augsburg's career record for receiving touchdowns, with his 36th scoring catch. Augsburg's career receiving touchdown record is 40, set by
Scott Hvistendahl (1995-98). Winford is second in school history in both career receptions (221) and receiving yardage (2,986 yards), both second to Hvistendahl's 285 catches for 4,696 yards.
Gustavus built a 13-3 second-quarter lead on touchdown rushes from Wilson and Jordan Becker, but the Auggies rallied back to take a 20-17 halftime lead, as #
Jason Potts# (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored twice, on a one-yard rush and, after a fumble was recovered by the Auggies on the ensuing kickoff, a 20-yard touchdown reception from Berg. Potts accounted for 89 yards of offense in the game, with 56 rushing yards on 16 carries and 33 yards on two receptions.
The Gusties took the lead back early in the third quarter, getting the ball at the Augsburg 23-yard line after an Augsburg gave up the football on a fumbled punt return.
