Women's Soccer 10/31/08 -- Macalester 2, Augsburg 1 (OT)
GAME BOXSCORE | AUGSBURG SEASON STATISTICS
ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/31/08) -- Emily Bardwell scored on a shot from 25 yards out at the 2:47 mark of the first overtime, lifting the Macalester College women's soccer team to a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoff berth and ending Augsburg College's season with a 2-1 victory on Friday night at Macalester Stadium.
Augsburg (10-4-4 overall, 5-2-4 MIAC) tied the game on a goal off a corner kick by Whitney Holman (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) with one second remaining in regulation time, forcing overtime with the Scots (9-7-2 overall, 6-3-2 MIAC). But Bardwell scored from Martha Coe at the 92:47 mark to claim the win for the Scots. Maddy Cochrane scored for the Scots in the 10th minute.
With the win, Macalester clinched a berth in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs based on tiebreaker criteria, and eliminated Augsburg -- breaking a streak of four straight seasons in which the Auggies made the MIAC playoffs. St. Thomas, Carleton and Concordia-Moorhead have also clinched berths in the conference playoffs.
"It's a devastating loss. For this team to not make the playoffs is a shame," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "However, I'm so proud of this team, their effort all season has been outstanding and once again they showed tremendous heart and character tonight."
Augsburg outshot Macalester by a 15-10 margin in the game and had eight corner kicks to Macalester's three. Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) had six saves for Augsburg in goal, while Jenny Lee had four saves for Macalester.
"We tip our hat to Macalester. We outshot and out-cornerkicked them, but they found a way to beat us," Navarre said.
Augsburg closed its 2008 campaign with 10 victories, its fifth double-digit victory season in the last seven years. Augsburg's senior class of DeGroot, Felicia Faison (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS), Kelley Schreiber (SR, Albert Lea, Minn.) and Kelsey Watsabaugh (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS) closed their four seasons with a 37-20-16 record, the fourth-most wins and fifth-best winning percentage (.616) of any senior class in the 24-season history of the Auggie women's soccer program.
"This senior class is a special group that won't be able to be replaced. We thank them for the leadership, friendship, and success they brought, and vow to continue our program's ascension," Navarre said.
