MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/6/08) -- The Augsburg College wrestling team claimed three individual champions and 12 placewinners in competition at the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon Open on Saturday at Alex Nemzek Hall.
Claiming individual titles for the Auggies, ranked No. 2 in the latest NCAA Division III national rankings, were Seth Flodeen (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) in the 125-pound Red bracket, Travis Lang (SR, Bismarck, N.D.) at 133 Red, and Andy Witzel (JR, Fulda, Minn.) at Heavyweight Red.
Lang, ranked No. 1 in the Division III individual national rankings at 133, improved to 8-0 on the season with three victories -- two first-period falls in the first two matches and a 15-6, major-decision win in the finals. Witzel, ranked No. 5 nationally at heavyweight, claimed two first-period pins in his opening matches and claimed a medical forfeit victory in the championship match to improve to 8-0 on the season.
In his first action of the year, Flodeen, the defending Division III national champion and current No. 1-ranked wrestler at 125, scored two pins, including a 4:54 pin in the championship match, and an 8-0 major decision in the semifinals to claim his individual crown.
Jason Adams (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.), ranked No. 3 nationally at 157, went 3-1 to take third place in his weight class, as did Tony Valek (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West ) at 141. Brett Landrum (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Matt Curtis (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) shared third place at 165, and Brandon Bahr (FY, Bemidji, Minn.) placed third at 174. Garrett Long (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) placed fourth at 184.
In White Division results, Alex Johnson (FY, Foxhome, Minn./Breckenridge HS) placed second at 133, while Johnny Brandtjen (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Simley HS) and Nick Creamier (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn.) placed fourth at 149 and heavyweight, respectively.
Augsburg returns to action hosting Southwest Minnesota State in a dual meet on Tuesady (12/9) at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
