QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (3/17/08) -- Sam Weber (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) struck out 12 batters in a complete-game effort in the opener, as the Augsburg College baseball team opened its competition at the Greater Phoenix Invitational with a split of a doubleheader with the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Monday afternoon at Queen Creek High School. Augsburg (3-5 overall) won the first game 6-2, while Wisconsin-Stout (5-2) won the second game 8-4.

Weber improved to 1-1 on the season with his first complete-game effort of the 2008 campaign, striking out 12 batters while allowing just two walks and seven hits. He was aided in the first game by eight Augsburg hits, including two by leadoff hitter Jeff Stomberg * (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Stomberg had a double and drove in three runs while scoring one. Derek Williamson (SO, St. Francis, Minn.) had a double and scored twice, and Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a triple and drove in a run.

Just one of the six runs surrendered by Wisconsin-Stout pitcher Nate Hanson was earned, as the Blue Devils committed four errors. Hanson struck out five while walking one in a complete-game effort. Mike White had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run for Stout.

In the second game, the Blue Devils built a 6-1 lead after two innings and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to stop an Auggie rally. Erik Johnson drove in six runs on 3-of-4 hitting at the plate, hitting a two-run homer and adding a double.

Augsburg starter Jason Kickhafer (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) took the loss, surrendering eight hits while striking out one and walking three. Chris Purcell (SO, Northfield, Minn.) pitched two innings of scoreless relief.

Craig Henry (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Williamson had two hits each for the Auggies, with Henry scoring twice and Williamson adding a double. Andersen also had a double for the Auggies in the second game.

Augsburg has a doubleheader against Central College (Iowa) on Tuesday (3/18) at 11:30 a.m. at Gene Autry Park in Mesa, Ariz.
