MESA, Ariz. (3/18/08) -- Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 4-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader, while Derek Williamson (SO, St. Francis, Minn.) hit two triples and drove in two runs, leading the Augsburg College baseball team in a split with Central College (Iowa) in a Greater Phoenix Invitational doubleheader on Tuesday at Gene Autry Park. Augsburg (4-6 overall) won the first game 6-5, while Central (5-4) won the second game 8-7 in eight innings.
A five-run fourth inning, keyed by a two-run triple by Williamson, enabled the Auggies to overcome an early 3-0 deficit in the first game. Andersen went 3-for-4, and Bryan Ludwig (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Pitchers Jon-Eric Urseth (JR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Alex Gustafson (JR, Anoka, Minn.) combined for a two-hitter for the Auggies. Urseth started and pitched four innings, while Gustafson pitched three innings of no-hit, shutout baseball to earn the save. Just two of the five runs charged to Urseth were earned.
In the second game, Augsburg rallied to tie the game with a two-run seventh inning, but Central won the game in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Blake Smith. Anthony Bazant had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs for the Dutch, while Jake Jadlowski also had two hits, including a triple.
Williamson went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Auggies with a triple, scoring two runs, while Craig Henry (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Jeff Stomberg * (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) also had triples. Henry drove in two runs and scored two runs, while Stomberg drove in a run and scored a run. James Panning (JR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Alex Glasenapp (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) started for the Auggies and struck out seven in four innings of work, with Adam Jacobsen (FY, Wayzata, Minn./Orono HS) and Shawn Sanders (JR, St. Charles, Minn.) pitching in relief.
Augsburg has a doubleheader against Hope College (Mich.) on Wednesday (3/19) at 12 p.m. in Phoenix.
