PHOENIX, Ariz. (3/19/08) -- Ryan Kaulbars (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) drove in four runs each in the first game, while Jeff Stomberg * (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 6-for-9 at the plate in the doubleheader, scoring four runs, as the Augsburg College baseball team scored a split with Hope College (Mich.) in a Greater Phoenix Invitational doubleheader on Wednesday at South Mountain Community College. Augsburg (5-7 overall) won the first game 17-6, while Hope (2-7) won the second game 5-2.
Augsburg pounded out 17 hits in the first game, including two doubles by Andersen and doubles by Stomberg, Kaulbars, Shea Sajevic (SO, Hastings, Minn.) and Derek Williamson (SO, St. Francis, Minn.). Leadoff hitter Stomberg went 4-for-5 at the plate, scoroing four runs, while Eric Olson * (SO, New Prague, Minn.) also scored four runs on 2-of-4 hitting at the plate with two RBI.
Kaulbars went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, and Andersen had four RBI on his two doubles, scoring twice. Williamson scored two runs, as did Mark Pederson (SR, Lexington, Minn./Centennial HS). James Panning (JR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in another. Sajevic and Al Davis (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) also drove in two runs each.
The Auggies scored five runs in the third inning, four more in the fourth and six runs in the fifth inning to build a big lead. Two more runs came across in the sixth. David Rasmussen (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) picked up the pitching win, pitching 4.2 innings. Brian Olson (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
For Hope, Matt Sattler went 3-for-3 with a triple, run scored and an RBI, while Scott Sommavilla went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the second game, Augsburg was limited to just five hits and committed four errors, which led to four unearned runs in the game. Stomberg went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Panning hit a solo home run in the third inning, scoring both runs for the Auggies in the game. Sajevic drove in a run for the Auggies in the fifth inning.
Starter Cole Oosterhuis (FY, White Bear Lake, Minn.) pitched four innings, but just one of the four runs charged to him were earned. Chris Purcell (SO, Northfield, Minn.) pitched two innings of relief, allowing an unearned run.
For Hope, Robbie Poll drove in two runs and Matt Vandervelde, Richie Burling and Scottie Schneider had three hits apiece. Sommavilla hit a double and Joey Goeb scored twice. Bobby Edelberg struck out five in a complete-game effort for the victory.
Augsburg is idle on Thursday (3/20) and faces Brockport State (N.Y.) on Friday (3/21) at 1 p.m. in Chandler, Ariz.
