MINNEAPOLIS (3/28/08) -- Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 6-for-8 at the plate in the doubleheader with a double, triple and four RBI, scoring four runs, and Derek Williamson (SO, St. Francis, Minn.) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and five RBI, as Augsburg College claimed a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Augsburg (10-8 overall, 2-0 MIAC) won the first game 5-2, and held off a late charge from St. Mary's (3-8 overall, 0-2 MIAC) in a 13-12 win in the second game. It was the opening MIAC doubleheader for both teams.

Sam Weber (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) pitched a complete-game, six-hitter for the Auggies in the first game, striking out seven while walking four. Meanwhile, St. Mary's used three pitchers in the game, with Andy Pass (SO, Roseville, Minn.) taking the loss.

Augsburg's Jeff Stomberg * (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) opened the first game for the Auggies by stealing second and third bases, scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning after being hit by a pitch. St. Mary's took the lead in the third inning, scoring two runs on an RBI double by Kevin Black (SR, Mahtomedi, Minn.) and an RBI single by Brady Knudsen (SR, Racine, Wis./Racine Park HS), but the Auggies grabbed the lead back with three runs in the fourth. A bases-loaded walk by Williamson, single by Nick Vavra (FY, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) and a fielder's choice by Mark Pederson (SR, Lexington, Minn./Centennial HS) plated the three runs. Augsburg added another run in the sixth, as Pederson drove in a run on a single.

The two teams combined for 25 runs and 27 hits in the second game, as Augsburg claimed 13 runs and 16 hits, while St. Mary's claimed 12 runs and 11 hits. Nine pitchers -- four Auggies and five Cardinals -- pitched in the contest. Augsburg jumped out to leads of 6-1, 10-3 and 13-6 in the closing innings, only to see St. Mary's rally each time -- including a six-run, 11-batter seventh inning which saw the potential go-ahead run on base.

Andersen went 4-for-5 at the plate with a triple and double, driving in four runs for the Auggies, while Craig Henry (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, ending up 4-for-7 with four runs scored in the doubleheader. Williamson went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in four runs.

For St. Mary's, Kyle Ryan (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs score, while Brady Knudsen (SR, Racine, Wis./Park HS) drove in three runs. Brandon Haugh (JR, Easton, Minn./United South Central HS) and Arron Merchlewitz (JR, Winona, Minn.) had two hits apiece, with one of Black's hits a double.

Both teams return to MIAC play with doubleheaders next Wednesday (4/2) at 2:30 p.m., as Augsburg hosts Carleton and St. Mary's plays at Gustavus.
