Augsburg closes season with losses at Concordia-Moorhead, 7-4 and 10-7.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/6/08) -- Scott Schumacher hit 5-for-7 at the plate with a double, driving in four runs while scoring two, leading Concordia College-Moorhead to a sweep of visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Tuesday at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex. The Cobbers (16-14 overall, 8-10 MIAC) swept the Auggies (16-20 overall, 8-12 MIAC) 7-4 and 10-7.

Kyle Johnson had two doubles among his three hits, scoring three runs and driving in three, for the Cobbers, while Fred Weiss hit a two-run homer and had an RBI double. In addition to going 4-for-4 at the plate in the first game, Schumacher struck out four while walking three in a complete-game pitching effort.

For Augsburg, Mike Zaun * (SR, Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) went 5-for-7 at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the first game with a double and RBI, and 3-for-4 with an double and RBI in the second game. Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had four hits, including two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored, and Brian Olson (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and Craig Henry (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) also had four hits with a double each.

Mark Pederson (SR, Lexington, Minn./Centennial HS) drove in four runs for the Auggies, while Eric Olson * (SO, New Prague, Minn.) had three hits and an RBI, scoring a run.

In the first game, the Cobbers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but the Auggies tied the game in the top of the third with three runs, including an RBI single by Zaun and a two-run single by Pederson. But Concordia jumped ahead to stay with a run in the fourth, and added three more runs in the sixth inning. Zaun doubled and scored on an error in the seventh inning for the final scoring in the game.

In the second game, Concordia used a three-run first inning, two-run second inning and four-run fourth inning to pull away from the Auggies. An RBI double by Andersen plated a run for the Auggies in the first inning, while singles by Andersen and Zaun plated runs in the third inning. A single by Eric Olson * drove in a run in the fourth, and singles by Bryan Ludwig (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) and Pederson drove in runs in the fifth. A bases-loaded walk drove in the Auggies' final run in the sixth frame.

Augsburg closed its fifth season under head coach Keith Bateman. Bateman's teams have recorded 16 or more victories in each of his five seasons at Augsburg.
