INDIANOLA, Iowa (8/29/08) -- Augsburg College goalkeeper Evan Fuhs (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) collected his fifth career shutout with a three-save effort, as the Auggie men's soccer team played to a 0-0, scoreless tie in two overtimes with Simpson College in the season-opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at the Simpson Soccer Field.
Augsburg outshot Simpson by a 16-9 margin, including a 4-3 edge in the 20 minutes of overtime, but Simpson goalkeeper Josh Youngman collected seven saves in the draw.
The scoreless tie was the first for Augsburg since a 0-0 tie at Carleton on Sept. 23, 2006. Augsburg will aim for its first win of the season at Central (Iowa) on Saturday (8/30) at 4 p.m.
"It was a disappointing result for us," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "We will need to be much better tomorrow if we want to compete with a very strong Central team (3-1 winners on Friday over Concordia-Wisconsin). A lot of credit must go to Simpson. They outworked us and did what they needed to get their point. We created chances and we kept a clean sheet. Hopefully, tomorrow we can sneak one or two by the Dutch."
Two shots by Augsburg's Van Hong (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn.) were turned away by the Storm in the final three minutes of the first overtime; a shot with 2:23 left nearly went in the net, but Youngman turned back the shot near the goal line, and another shot with under a minute left was blocked by a Simpson defender.
Hong had five shots to lead the Auggies, while Andrew Seidel (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) had four shots and #D.J. Wendell# (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) had three shots. Augsburg lost a player to injury five minutes into play, and another player missed a game due to illness, Holker said.
"Peter Loyd (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was our best player on the day. He had a certain goal cleared off the line into the crossbar by a player on the post off a corner kick," Holker said. "Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) was up to the task, and Alex Calof (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) did well playing 90 minutes. D.J. Wendell was dangerous and almost ended the game in OT with a low shot from six yards out that Youngman saved."
