Cross Country 8/30/08 -- Augsburg vs. Bethel dual meet

MINNEAPOLIS (8/30/08) -- For the second consecutive year, course records were set in both the men's and women's races, as Bethel University captured wins over host Augsburg College in a cross country dual meet Saturday morning at Riverside Park.
The men's race featured a heated contest between Augsburg's Brent Haglund (JR, Fridley, Minn.) and Bethel's Dan Greeno. Both ran a tight race across the entire 5,000 meters and both considerably lowered the previous course record of 15:47. Greeno, for the third consecutive year, took home top honors with a time of 15:23 just edging Haglund who came across the line in 15:26.
Second across the line for the Auggie men, placing sixth, was Victor Sanchez (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) in 16:40, a time nearly two minutes faster than his time in this same race a year ago. Next in for the Auggies, placing 10th, was Shane Wyborny (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) in 17:13. Ben Rodriguez (FY, Buffalo, Minn.) and Tony Fremling (FY, Brookston, Minn./AlBrook HS) rounded out the top five for the Auggies, finishing in 14th (17:25) and 18th place (18:08), respectively.
Also competing for the Auggie men was John Goetz (FY, Minnetonka, Minn), Jason Chrudimsky (SO, Antigo, Wis.), Geoff Gillmor (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Austin Erickson (FY, Albany, Minn.). Goetz finished in 19th place with a time of 18:54, Chrudimsky finished 20th with a time of 19:02, Gillmor finished in 22nd with a time of 19:25 and Erickson finished in 23rd with a time of 19:31.
On the women's side, defending MIAC champion Marie Borner of Bethel smashed the 5,000 meter course record previously held by former teammate Nikki Umhoefer. Borner finished in a time of 18:13 and lowered the former course record by 32 seconds.
The Auggie women were paced by Jennifer Lovering (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) who finished the race in fourth place with a time of 20:33. Second in for the Auggies was Sadie Dietrich (JR, Luverne, Minn.) who finished ninth (21:31) in her first race back after taking off last season to study abroad in China. Next for the Auggies was Kacie Bahr ( FY, Brainerd, Minn.) who sprinted past a Bethel runner in the final 100 meters of the race to claim the 10th place spot (21:43).
The next pack of Auggie runners finished in 13th, 15th, 16th, and 17th place. Jennifer Pulscher (FY, Colorado Springs, Colo. Liberty HS) led the group finishing in 22:43. Not far behind were Kim Carlson (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), Kristen Bunge (FY, Preston, Minn./Fillmore Central HS), and Bree McLuen (Maple Grove, Minn./Alpha Omega Academy HS) who finished in 23:39, 23:48 and 24:02 respectively. Also running for the Auggies was Kelsie Lungstrom (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) who finished in 21st place with a time of 26:53.
"It was a good season opener for both our men and women. Our teams are young so many of them were competing in their first college meet. But they ran well. And all of our returning runners on the men's team ran faster than they did last year at this meet, as did most of our returning women," commented coach Dennis Barker after the race.
The Auggies' next action will take place on Sept. 13 when they travel to Grafton, Mass. for the Tufts University Jumbo Invitational.
