GAME BOXSCORE | AUGSBURG SEASON STATISTICS
DULUTH, Minn. (9/10/08) -- Bri Clark (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored the game-winning goal off a blocked shot by Courtney Gamrath (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) in the 75th minute, and Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) claimed her school-record 31st career shutout in goal with a five-save effort, as Augsburg College scored a 1-0 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in a nonconference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at CSS' Saints Field.
Playing in a steady rain, Clark put home a shot after a header by Gamrath was mishandled by St. Scholastica goalkeeper Bailey Mahlum with 15:57 left in regulation, helping the Auggies to improve to 4-1-1 overall. Clark now has two of Augsburg's four goals scored this season. St. Scholastica, an NCAA Division III national tournament team last season, is now 5-1-0 on the year.
"The weather made it difficult for both teams today. However, we did get better as the game wore on and ultimately established the intensity and focus we needed to pull us through," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Although we were playing hard, we challenged everyone to increase their commitment to the game at halftime, and I was proud with how the team responded. It was a good win on the road against one of the best teams in the region."
DeGroot has claimed shutouts in five of her six starts this season for Augsburg, with a 0.33 goals-against-average to her credit. DeGroot is also edging closer to Augsburg's school record for career victories. She claimed her 31st career victory on Saturday; Beth Petrik claimed 34 victories in her career (1995-98), while Laura Hoffman (2000-03) holds the career record with 35 wins in goal.
Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by an 8-7 margin, with Whitney Holman (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) claiming two shots. Mahlum had three saves for St. Scholastica.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (9/17) at 7:30 p.m., with a home game against Hamline at Edor Nelson Field.
