GAME STATISTICS

MINNEAPOLIS (9/27/08) -- Quarterback #Jordan Berg *# (SR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) threw three touchdown passes to wide receiver #Royce Winford *# (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS), and running back #Jason Potts# (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) rushed for two more touchdowns, as Augsburg College remained unbeaten with a 49-21 victory over visiting St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

With the win, Augsburg improved to 3-0 overall (1-0 MIAC), the first time it has started 3-0 since the 1999 season. The 49 points were the most scored by an Augsburg squad since a 50-14 win over Macalester on Oct. 13, 2001. St. Olaf falls to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in MIAC play.

Augsburg scored touchdowns on its first five drives to build a 35-14 halftime lead, and ended up producing 456 yards of total offense (397 passing, 59 passing), while limiting St. Olaf to 252 yards of total offense (173 passing, 79 rushing). Augsburg also took advantage of four St. Olaf turnovers (two fumbles, two interceptions), turning each into touchdowns on subsequent drives.

Berg completed 37-of-53 passing for 397 yards -- the ninth 300-yard-plus passing performance of his career -- while Winford caught 13 passes for 116 yards -- the 12th 100-yard receiving game of his career and ninth in his last 13 starts. Also a cornerback on defense, Winford collected a first-quarter interception for the Auggies. #Muneer Al-Hameed# (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught nine passes for 102 yards, and Potts caught seven passes for 78 yards, while also rushing 11 times for 33 yards.

In all, six different Auggies caught passes from Berg, who edged closer to eclipsing every Augsburg career passing record. In just his 23rd career start over three seasons (he played his initial year at Division II Minnesota-Duluth), Berg has already set school records for career completions (594) and touchdowns (56), while standing second in school history in both career passing attempts (998) and passing yardage (6,507). Berg has the chance to break both school records in his next start; Derrin Lamker (1993-97) holds the school records for career passing attempts (1,022) and passing yardage (6,624).

Meanwhile, Winford is just one catch away from moving into second place in Augsburg's career receptions list. He now has 185 catches for 2,454 yards and 31 touchdowns in his career. Scott Hvistendahl (1995-98) holds every receiving career record -- 285 receptions for 4,696 yards and 40 touchdowns -- and Andrew Neumann (2003-06) is in second place in career receptions with 186.

Augsburg built a 21-0 first-quarter lead, keying on rushing touchdowns of nine yards and one yard by Potts, and a one-yard touchdown pass from Berg to Winford. Winford and Berg also hooked up for five-yard and three-yard touchdown strikes in the second half.

The Auggies also took advantage of a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown just before halftime by #David Tilton# (SO, Anoka, Minn.), and a 64-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by #Andrew Bergeson# (JR, Red Wing, Minn.) off a sack and fumble by #Alex Glasenapp# (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) early in the fourth quarter.

John Haberman (JR, Brainerd, Minn.) threw two touchdown passes for St. Olaf; a 14-yard pass to Ryan St. John (SR, Farmington, Minn.) in the second quarter and a three-yard pass to Mike Shimshock (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) in the fourth quarter. Coty Watkins (SR, Bloomington, Minn.) also scored for the Oles on a 43-yard run in the second quarter.

Haberman completed 13-of-23 passes for 173 yards, but was intercepted twice -- once by Winford and the other by Augsburg's #Donovan Bates# (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.). Watkins rushed 10 times for 62 yards, and Jared Mueller (SO, Brainerd, Minn.) caught two passes for 60 yards. Evan Endsley (SR, Eagan, Minn.) caught three passes for 50 yards.

Defensively, St. Olaf's Adam Concannon (JR, Orlando, Fla.) led all players with 14 tackles (six solo), including two tackles for loss. Chris DeLuca (JR, Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary HS) had 10 tackles (five solo) and a fumble recovery, and Ryan Skluzacek (JR, Northfield, Minn.) had eight tackles (four solo).

For Augsburg, #Sean Kelly# (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had seven tackles, while #Adam Mead# (SO, St. Francis, Minn.) had six tackles (two solo) and a fumble recovery. Glasenapp recorded five tackles (three solo), including two sacks, three tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
