BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS -- Against Bethel University on Tuesday night, the Augsburg College women's soccer team dominated in virtually every facet of the game -- except the one that counts the most.
Augsburg claimed a 20-10 advantage in shots, including a 17-6 advantage in the second half, while also getting eight corner kicks to Bethel's zero.
But ultimately, a two-goal outburst in a 2:07 span cost the Auggies, as the Royals claimed a 2-1 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
"When you out-shoot a team 20 to 10, and have eight corner kicks to zero, you'd expect to win, but soccer is a humble game and it often takes more than talent to win," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "To the average fan, it probably looked like we were just 'unlucky' tonight, but that's not the case. We did not play the full 90 minutes and, therefore, we deserved to lose."
Augsburg took a 1-0 lead with 1:04 left in the first half, after
Lacey Hoover (JR, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season, collecting a loose ball and scoring in front of the goal.
Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and
Kelsey Sorensen (FY, Eden Prairie, Minn.) were credited with assists on Hoover's goal.
But Bethel struck quickly in the second half, with two of its six second-half shots going in the net. Kelsey Flaherty (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) completed a give-and-go with Brittany Griffore (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) with a shot across the box at the 55:42 mark, and 2:07 later, Leah Hardie (SO, Ankeny, Iowa) scored on a rebound off a shot from Breanna Posey (SR, Champlin, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS).
After the Bethel goals, Augsburg took over possession, controlling the ball for most of the remainder of the game and getting numerous opportunities to score -- including a missed penalty shot in the 67th minute and a scramble that resulted in the ball literally on the goal line, but not fully across the line and into the net, in the 79th minute.
Hoover had 11 of Augsburg's 20 shots in the game, including five on-net. Sorensen and
Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two shots apiece. Griffore and Flaherty had three shots each for the Royals.
Bethel goalkeeper Alyssa Riggs (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) had seven saves, while Augsburg starter
Diana Bocklund (FY, Mahtomedi, Minn.) had three saves in the first half.
Katie Flakne (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had three second-half saves for the Auggies.
Both teams return to MIAC playon Saturday (10/17) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Carleton and Bethel hosting St. Benedict.
