Auggies score 27-20 OT win at Concordia

BOXSCORE

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Wide receivers Mike Nourie (SR, Nicollet, Minn.) and Muneer Al-Hameed (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) both went over the 2,000-yard mark for career receiving yardage for Augsburg College, as the Auggies survived a fourth-quarter comeback by Concordia College-Moorhead, winning 27-20 in overtime in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Concordia's Jake Christiansen Stadium.

The Auggies (3-3 overall, 2-2 MIAC) scored on its overtime possession, as quarterback Marcus Brumm (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Nourie, and the Auggie defense stopped Concordia (2-4 overall, 0-4 MIAC) from scoring, with a sack by Alex Glasenapp (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) -- his second sack of the overtime session -- on fourth down sealing the victory.

The win, Augsburg's fifth overtime victory in its nine extra-session games since the NCAA introduced overtime in college football in 1996, broke a nine-game winning streak by the Cobbers in the all-time series with the Auggies. The win was Augsburg's first in a game played at Jake Christiansen Stadium since a 13-3 win on Sept. 17, 1994 (Augsburg had claimed a win in the Fargo-Moorhead area in the 1997 NCAA Division III national playoffs, but the game was played at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.).

With seven catches for 74 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion, Nourie now has 181 catches for 2,072 yards in his career, moving him into fifth place in school history in career receiving yardage and fourth place in career receptions.

Meanwhile, Al-Hameed, a junior, collected seven catches for 80 yards and a touchdown, moving him to 164 career receptions (fifth place in school history) and 2,007 receiving yards (sixth place in school history).

Augsburg built a 20-3 lead in the fourth quarter, but Concordia staged a miracle comeback to force overtime, scoring two touchdowns and adding a field goal in the final 7:52 of play.

The Auggies struck first midway late in the first quarter, as a nine-play, 75-yard drive was capped by a one-yard scoring run by Brumm. Brumm also had a big play earlier in the drive, when he rushed six yards for a first down on a fourth-and-four play from the Concordia 26-yard line.

Concordia's Carl Hauser cut the lead to 6-3 with a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter, but another Cobber drive was thwarted in the final minute of the first half, when Tyler Phillips (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) intercepted a Cobber pass in the end zone.

Andrew Bergeson (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) stopped a Concordia drive on a fumble recovery at the Auggie 48-yard line on Concordia's first drive of the third quarter. Nine plays later, Brumm completed a 14-yard slant pass to Al-Hameed for the Auggies' second touchdown of the game.

The Auggies pulled a trick play early in the fourth quarter, with a fake field-goal attempt. Holder Andy Roff (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS completed a 22-yard pass to Brady Soule (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), and the two-point conversion pass from Brumm to Nourie gave the Auggies a 20-3 lead.

The Cobbers began their comeback with a wild touchdown pass, as backup quarterback Michael Dunham threw to Jake Krause. At the Augsburg 1-yard line, John Hibbs (JR, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS)  forced a fumble, but Krause recovered the ball in the end zone, cutting the advantage to 20-10 with 7:52 left.

The Cobbers' next drive resulted in a 22-yard field goal by Hauser, cutting the lead to 20-13 with just under five minutes left. After holding the Auggies twice, the Cobbers tied the game with 57 seconds left in regulation, marching 59 yards in seven plays taking just 50 seconds. Dunham capped the drive with a 19-yard pass to Zach Weller for the tying score.

A mistake nearly cost the Auggies in regulation, as a squib kick was not covered by an Augsburg player, and the Cobbers recovered the free ball at the Augsburg 25-yard line. But with nine seconds left, the Auggies blocked a 24-yard Hauser field-goal attempt, setting up overtime.

Brumm threw for 201 yards on 21-of-42 passing for the Auggies, while rushing for 25 yards on 11 carries. In addition to Al-Hameed's 80 receiving yards and Nourie's 74, Auggie tight end Josh Pronschinske (JR, Fountain City, Wis./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) caught four passes for 39 yards.

For the Cobbers, Dunham completed 19-of-35 passing for 244 yards -- all in the fourth quarter in relief of starter Larson, who threw for 138 yards while rushing for 34. Krause caught six passes for 97 yards, while Bronson Shepherd caught six passes for 88 yards, Chris Gilson caught six passes for 67 yards and Weller caught four passes for 77 yards.

Augsburg's defense limited Concordia to just 118 rushing yards in the game. Bergeson led the way for the Auggie defense with 15 tackles, while Adam Mead (JR, St. Francis, Minn.) had 11 tackles (five solo), including a sack. Glasenapp had 10 tackles (six solo), with 2.5 sacks. For the Cobbers, Xavier Carroll led the way with seven tackles.

Both teams return to MIAC play next Saturday (10/24) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Gustavus and Concordia hosting Hamline.
