Auggies score 2-0 win over UWRF

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Emily Sell (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Becca Erickson (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn.) each scored their first collegiate goals, lifting Augsburg College to a 2-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a nonconference women's soccer game Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Diana Bocklund (FY, Mahtomedi, Minn.), this past week's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week, collected three saves in goal for her fourth shutout of the season for Augsburg (4-6-5 overall), which snapped a four-game winless streak (0-2-2) with the victory.

Wisconsin-River Falls (8-8-1 overall) goalkeeper Rachel Thompson (SO, Cedar Falls, Iowa) had six saves.

Augsburg controlled the tempo of the game throughout, outshooting Wisconsin-River Falls by a 23-10 margin, including a 15-5 advantage in the second half. The Auggies also had seven corner kicks to the Falcons' two.

"We played well tonight. We are starting to play the soccer we are capable of," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "This team has a lot of talent; it's just taken some time to put things together. Although we can't take back some tough results earlier in the year, we can look forward to our next three matches with optimism and enthusiasm."

Augsburg scored its first goal in the 42nd minute. Following a corner kick by Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Gina Liddell-Westefeld (JR, Iowa City, Iowa) directed a shot away from Thompson, and a Falcon teammate had to make a defensive save to prevent the ball from going in the net. On the rebound, Sell put the ball home for her first collegiate goal.

The Auggies cemented the win in the 89th minute, as Erickson scored her first collegiate goal, putting home a shot in front off a free kick from 30 yards out by Kristi Castelic (SR, De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS).

"We had two great goals off of set pieces. Whitney gave us a great serve and Emily pounded home a rebound that Gina struck well," Navarre said. "Kristi sent a great ball in that Becca redirected into the goal. It was great that our defenders assisted on our goals tonight. Their effort deserves some credit, but really the whole team played well tonight. We need to keep this going."

Lacey Hoover (JR, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) had seven shots for the Auggies, including a header that hit the crossbar in the 66th minute. Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and Courtney Gamrath (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had three shots each.

Janae Baron (FY, Hermantown, Minn.) and Cassie Stang (FY, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) had three shots apiece for the Falcons.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (10/24) at 1 p.m., with a game at Hamline.
