ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Kelsey Sorensen (FY, Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored two goals each, leading the Augsburg College women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Hamline's Pat Paterson Field.
Holman scored twice in the first half, as the Auggies (5-6-5 overall, 2-5-2 MIAC) built a 4-0 halftime lead over the Pipers (3-12-1 overall, 0-8-1 MIAC). Two goals in a 57-second span late in the game by Sorensen capped the scoring for the Auggies, who have now claimed three straight shutouts (2-0-1) and two straight victories.
The six goals were the most by the Auggies in a single game since a 6-0 win at Northwestern-Roseville on Aug. 31, 2007.
"Today's win was special," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "We are definitely playing our best soccer of the season right now. To put up four goals in the first half was impressive. We have great energy within the team right now and are determined to finish the season on a high note."
Holman scored on a corner kick in the 12th minute, deflecting the kick off a Hamline player and into the net.
Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) followed with a goal in the 16th minute, off an assist by
Kristi Castelic (SR, De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS).
Castelic assisted on the Auggies' next goal, a score by
Lisa Weniger (JR, Eagan, Minn./School of Environmental Studies HS) in the 27th minute. Holman capped the first-half scoring for the Auggies with a goal on a direct kick in the 40th minute.
"I'm glad Whit was able to get a couple of goals today, she deserves it," Navarre said. "Whit is an excellent player who has the rare ability as a marking back to impact the game both offensively and defensively."
Sorensen scored her first goal at the 78:42 mark off an assist by
Lindsey Niederhaus (SO, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS), then scored from
Gina Liddell-Westefeld (JR, Iowa City, Iowa) at the 79:39 mark.
Augsburg used all three of its goalkeepers to combine for the shutout, with
Diana Bocklund (FY, Mahtomedi, Minn.) playing the first half and collecting one save, and
Katie Flakne (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and
Taylor Becker (SO, Red Wing, Minn.) splitting time in the second half. Flakne had two saves.
"I was particularly proud of our goalkeepers. We played all of our keepers today and each of them kept a clean sheet to continue our shutout streak," Navarre said.
Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 12-8 margin. Liz Stock had one save in the first half for Hamline, while Katherine Gardner had three saves in the second half.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (10/28) at 6 p.m., with a game at St. Mary's.
